Western Cape Government Donates 300 Bicycles to Schools as Part of Mobility Month

The Western Cape Government has donated 300 bicycles to over 40 schools to help create a healthier, safer, and more sustainable provincial region.

Premier Alan stated that this initiative was part of Mobility Month and coincided with the annual Western Cape Government Tour 2026. A total of 42 educational institutions from the municipalities of Saldanha Bay, Berg River, Drakenstein, Witzenberg, Bridle Valley, Stellenbosch, and Cape Town City benefited from the initiative.

From October 5 to 9, 2026, Alan and his Cabinet focused on cycling in communities across the Western Cape, where participants covered a distance of 200 kilometers. The Premier noted that this tour is part of the provincial government's broader efforts to encourage residents to leave their cars at home and increase space for non-motorized transport on provincial roads.

The Pedal Power Association (PPA) and the Bicycle Expansion Network (BEN) are working to promote a cycling culture, raise road safety awareness, and encourage responsible road use by all road users. The Premier emphasized that increasing the number of people who cycle contributes to forming a healthier lifestyle, reducing dependence on motorized transport, and creating safer roads for everyone.

He added that the donation of bicycles to schools aims to give students more opportunities to enjoy the benefits of cycling while teaching them responsibility. According to the Premier, these bicycles also help support Neighbourhood Watch groups (NHWs) with necessary resources, as safe communities require the participation of every resident. He concluded that whether you are cycling to school, work, or helping maintain neighborhood safety, mutual care is crucial.
