The modern Generation Z is not satisfied with just a good job and a monthly salary. They aim to save enough money so that in the future they do not have to depend on work solely to cover expenses. This idea is connected to the term FIRE, which stands for 'Financial Independence, Retire Early.'
The FIRE concept involves strengthening a person's financial position at a young age so that they can independently choose whether to work or retire.
For Generation Z, financial freedom is not just a dream of early retirement. Growing expenses, difficulties in purchasing housing, and general employment uncertainty play a significant role. According to the Deloitte 2026 Gen Z and Millennials Survey, 54% of Generation Z in India postponed important life decisions due to their financial situation. Over 60% of Gen Z and millennials noted that the cost or availability of housing affects their career choices. The report also emphasizes that financial independence is among the main priorities of Generation Z in India.
Thus, for Generation Z, money is not just a means to increase spending, but also a guarantee of freedom to make decisions in their own lives.
Within the FIRE movement, the emphasis is on directing the majority of earned income towards savings and investments. The goal is for accumulated savings and investments to generate income sufficient to cover daily needs. The FIRE focus has always been on achieving financial independence earlier, rather than waiting for traditional retirement age.
However, this does not mean that Generation Z necessarily wants to stop working completely at 30 or 35. The essence of FIRE lies in creating a financial state that gives a person the option to continue working, changing careers, or retiring by their own choice. Consequently, Generation Z's dream of financial freedom is about gaining control over time and one's decisions, not just accumulating capital.
