After witnessing the death of a cow found to have nearly 5 kg of plastic in its stomach, Akshai Deshpande decided to address the issue of waste management in India. After conducting over 780 interviews, he founded Switcheko Sustainability in Hyderabad to find more effective methods for waste management.
As part of this initiative, a 22-foot solar-powered mobile truck unit was developed. This vehicle is capable of sorting, shredding, and recycling waste directly on-site before it reaches a landfill. The project has already processed over 100 thousand kilograms of garbage, covered more than 400 thousand people, and created jobs for about 180 women.
This solution brings waste management closer to local communities while emphasizing the critical importance of reducing plastic pollution and improving source separation. The story demonstrates how local ideas can contribute to solving large-scale environmental problems by offering an innovative approach to sustainable waste management.
