Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns prepare for the final tactical showdown in the MTN8 match

Football has taken over Durban as Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns prepare to meet in the MTN8 tournament final on Saturday. The match will take place at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday evening, starting at 18:00.

MTN8 Final

After a long international break, South Africa's domestic football life has resumed, with two leading national teams competing for the first trophy of the season. Orlando Pirates aim to secure their fifth consecutive title, while Mamelodi Sundowns hope to win a cup that has eluded them for several years.

The intense rivalry between the clubs means that coaches Abdelslam Waddu and Miguel Cardoso must devise effective tactical solutions to ensure their team wins the MTN8 final at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday evening.

Pirates and Sundowns are among the best teams in national football over the last decade. They have not only won the most trophies but have also demonstrated dominance and class in play. Although they have shared this success, Pirates have had the edge in cup competitions, winning seven trophies in the last four seasons, after overthrowing Sundowns, who dominated for eight consecutive years, last season.

Pirates have also beaten Sundowns in two cup finals in the last five years—in the 2023 MTN8 final and the 2024 Nedbank Cup final. Therefore, the Brazilians will be aiming for a third victory when the two teams meet in Durban.

Nevertheless, Sundowns' focus on restoring their dominance in national cups, especially after recent conquests in Africa and the Asia-Pacific region, prevents them from being overly concerned about past defeats to Pirates.

Sundowns defender Grant Ekana stated: 'It is not personal. We do not like to make games personal. I think it is more about us performing better than last season. We had a good start to the season, so we just want to maintain that momentum. We are very motivated and positive. All players have gotten a chance, so I don't think we are far behind each other as teams. It's just about executing what we know and what we have worked on to get a positive result this weekend.'

The two teams know each other well. Both teams started the season without losses, reaching the final, finishing first in the Betway Premiership, and being one match away from qualifying for the CAF Champions League group stage. Furthermore, their players share a strong camaraderie in the national team, Bafana Bafana.

Thus, although the battle on the field requires loyalty to the club and focus on the task, after the final whistle, they remain brothers. This is why the coaches need to win tactically, not through psychological games or physical confrontations.

Ekana added: 'Brotherhood has helped us understand each other very much—even as rivals. Football has evolved. It used to be a physical battle, but now it is about who does it correctly from a tactical point of view. So this will be another one of those matches. We just hope it will be an enjoyable game for neutral spectators and especially for our fans. We will give everything on the field—even a piece of our skin.'

Pirates' coach warns that MTN8 victory history will not help against Sundowns

Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Waddu warned that the team's past successes in the MTN8 tournament might provide a psychological advantage ahead of Saturday's match against Mamelodi Sundowns. Nevertheless, he emphasized that historical achievements will have minimal significance when the teams meet in the final at Moses Mabhida Stadium.

The 'Pirates' aim to secure an unprecedented fifth consecutive MTN8 title, but Waddu understands that overcoming Sundowns will require more than impressive statistics in this competition.

Past experience versus final reality

During the MTN8 media day on Wednesday at Rand Stadium, Waddu told journalists: 'This is a different game, a different era. We need to prepare for it with greater ambition and seriousness. These things (referring to victories in the last four MTN8 editions) can help morally, but the reality will be in the match itself and how we approach the game.'

Although the 'Bucaneers' have established themselves as a dominant force in the MTN8 in recent seasons, Waddu believes that the cup final demands a different mentality than a league match.

He added: 'I think it can help us psychologically, but ultimately it is two 11-a-side teams, so fighting spirit is needed. Winning the cup final requires more than tactics... sometimes you need to dig deeper and play with a strong heart. There is a huge difference between a cup match and a league match.'

The 'Pirates' prepared for the final with a limited squad, as 12 players were away on international duty during the FIFA break. The players only returned to the club in the final stages of preparation for Saturday's final, leaving Waddu little time to work with the full squad.

Sundowns' motivation

For their part, Sundowns enter the final confidently after their recent victory in the Africa-Asia-Pacific Cup, which they secured over Al Ahli Saudi Arabia. The Brazilians are also determined to end the Pirates' dominance in the tournament, as they last won the MTN8 in 2021.

The final will take place at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday at 18:00, and tickets for it are sold out.

Young Orlando Pirates squad prepares for MTN8 final against Mamelodi Sundowns

The Orlando Pirates team, possessing a relatively young squad and a new look, intends to play without fear, with responsibility, and determination when facing the fully formed Mamelodi Sundowns team in the MTN8 final, which will take place at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday evening at 18:00.

Pirates are on track to win an unprecedented fifth consecutive MTN8 title. However, they need to achieve this with a squad that is still in the process of integrating after several departures of key players and injuries in recent months.

The heart of the team was refreshed from the start with the signing of Tapelo Mokobodi and Mtheteleli Mthiyani from Stellenbosch, who filled the gaps left by the injuries of Talente Mbati and Sichle Nduli.

In attack, young players Mpho Padime and Simphiwe Masilela have shown potential, but coach Abdeslam Waddu expressed disappointment with their showy performances, especially when opportunities arise to secure a victory.

Preparation for the clash with Sundowns

Facing the relentless and aggressive attack of Sundowns, which includes Bryan Leon, Cassius Mailula, Tashrik Matthews, and Antonio Van Wyk, Pirates may face difficulties if they deviate from their game plan and basic principles.

Nevertheless, Buccaneers captain Tapelo Shoki remains composed. He is convinced that the players deserve their place in the club and are fully ready to defend the MTN8, Betway Premiership, and Carling Knockout trophies.

'First of all, they didn't reach this stage by chance. They worked hard and earned their spot. The club entrusted them with the roles and responsibilities they have. For us, it is always to remind them of that,' said Shoki.

He added that the players must play in their own style, as this style brought them to this stage, and that they are currently in a week where some of them are playing in their first final, but they are not at risk.

The young players and newcomers receive good support. The FIFA international break played in the team's favor, allowing Mbati and Mahlenni Makhaule to fully recover and return to the fight for the final.

'There are guys who have played in some of these finals,' Shoki continued. 'There are guys who will guide them on that day. There is also technical staff who is experienced enough to know what is required and what to tell them. They are not at risk. They are ready.'

'Everyone wearing the Orlando Pirates jersey is ready. Years of sacrifice and preparation have brought them here. It is just a moment for them to do it.'
