Volkswagen improves Tera with 200 TSI engine and eight-speed gearbox in response to the arrival of the Jeep Avenger

Volkswagen has implemented significant improvements to the Tera model, introducing the 200 TSI engine and an eight-speed automatic transmission in the Comfort and High versions. This mechanical update occurs during a period of intense competition among entry-level SUVs, especially after the launch of the Jeep Avenger, intensifying the battle for customers looking for a basic sport utility vehicle.

Price specifications indicate that the Comfort version has a suggested value of R$ 134,790, while the High version starts at R$ 147,190, representing increases of R$ 1.3 thousand and R$ 1,000, respectively. Both versions share the same content package.

The Tera Comfort comes standard equipped with six airbags, autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control (ACC), air conditioning, electric steering, LED headlights and taillights, an 8-inch digital panel, a 10.1-inch VW Play multimedia center with App-Connect, rear parking sensors, cruise control, 16-inch steel wheels, keyless access and push-button start, Start-Stop system, front armrest, front and rear USB-C ports, and a multi-function steering wheel with premium trim and shift paddles.

The High version adds 17-inch alloy wheels, a larger 10.25-inch digital panel, a rearview camera, front parking sensors, electrochromic interior mirror, rain and dusk sensors, ambient LED lighting, glove box lighting, split rear seat, and a six-speaker system.

The 200 TSI engine serves as a strategic differentiator for Volkswagen in this segment. With 70,000 units licensed between January and September, the SUV is only behind its sibling T-Cross, which exceeded 71,000 units, according to Fenabrave data. Its main rival is the Fiat Pulse, which registered 42,000 registrations during the year, although the latter suffered a power reduction to lower taxes.

The arrival of the Avenger raises pressure on the retail market, leading VW to present this update. The Jeep, scheduled to be launched in Brazil in August 2026, is the American manufacturer's new entry offering and competes directly with the Tera, Fiat Pulse, Chevrolet Sonic, and Renault Kardian. With promotional launch prices starting from R$ 114,990, the model uses a flex turbo engine with a 12-volt mild hybrid system and a CVT automatic transmission.

In this competitive context, Volkswagen modernized the mechanical assembly of the Tera to increase its ability to compete. The three-cylinder 1.0 turbo engine generates 128 hp of power and 20.4 kgfm of torque, coupled with the eight-speed automatic transmission. Previously, the automatic configurations used the 170 TSI engine, while the manual version maintained this same engine.

This mechanical change aligns the Tera with other Volkswagen vehicles that use the 200 TSI, such as the T-Cross and Nivus. According to the manufacturer, the new transmission allows for optimizing ratios to improve acceleration, ensure smoother acceleration, and reduce revolutions during constant speed driving.
