Tips for Organizing the Home Shrine During Sharadiya Navratri: How to Maintain Order

Before Navratri begins, people actively clean and decorate their home shrines. It is important that the shrine remains clean and organized throughout the nine days dedicated to worshipping Goddess Durga. For the festival, new items are often added to the shrine, such as installing a kalash on the first day and wrapping a coconut around the maternal chunni on the lotus. Additionally, in most homes, barley seeds are sown in clay pots. This leads to an accumulation of many items in the shrine, such as worship paraphernalia, kalashes, lamps, flowers, and aarti trays, which can make the shrine untidy.

To keep your shrine beautiful and organized despite the large number of items, you can use several simple and smart methods.

The installation of a kalash holds special significance during Navratri. You need to choose a place in the shrine where the kalash will be stable and there will be enough space nearby to conduct rituals. The kalash should always be placed on a flat pedestal or a designated spot, avoiding placement near items that will need to be frequently moved during worship.

In the worship tray, roli, akshat, kumkum, molis, flowers, and other necessary materials are placed. To avoid searching for these items during the ritual, they should be kept in separate small bowls. The tray itself is best placed on a shelf or in a drawer in the shrine, from where it is easy to access.

Instead of keeping lamps, matches, ghee, or oil and incense together, separate places should be allocated for them. The lamp must be placed where there are no fabrics, paper, or decorative items that could ignite.

Marigold flowers, mango leaves, and red or yellow colored fabrics are used to decorate the shrine. A clean cloth is spread on the pedestal. After using the decorative items, they should be put away in one cabinet, as this will facilitate their subsequent retrieval.

Items needed for worship over the nine days should be arranged so they are easy to reach. Separate places should be designated for the chunri, bell, aarti tray, and prayer books. Small baskets or boxes can be used for smaller items. This way, the shrine looks perfectly organized, and the correct placement of everything makes it more aesthetic.

During Navratri, flowers are offered daily and lamps are lit. Therefore, it is necessary to remove old flowers, clear scattered materials after worship, and ensure that water does not accumulate around the shrine. This ensures the cleanliness of the place of worship and helps all items remain in place.

Vastu Tips: 5 Inauspicious Items to Remove from Home Before Navratri

The sacred festival of Navratri is approaching, and many people are starting to clean their homes. However, according to the principles of Vastu Shastra, simply dusting the house is not enough. Some broken and useless items left in the home contribute to an increase in negative energy, which can cause displeasure from Mother Durga and Goddess Lakshmi. To ensure well-being and success during Navratri, it is recommended to immediately discard the five listed items.

Items that should be immediately removed from the home:

  • Dried Tulsi leaves and thorny plants: Tulsi is considered a very sacred plant. If the plant dries up, it must be removed immediately, as a dry bush brings poverty and gloom into the home. Thorny plants, such as cacti, should also not be kept in the house. It is recommended to either bury the dry bush in the ground or release it into a river, replacing it with a new, green Tulsi or Monstera plant.
  • Broken statues and photographs: Damaged statues or torn images of deities should never be left in the home shrine, as this creates a Vastu defect in the house. If the statue is made of clay, it should be washed away in water; if it is made of another metal, it should be placed under a peepal tree.
  • Broken or old brooms: The broom is associated with Goddess Lakshmi. Having a broken or very old broom can lead to financial difficulties. The old broom must be thrown away before Navratri begins, and a new one should be purchased.
  • Expired medicines and broken dishes: It is strictly forbidden to keep expired medications, old papers, cracked dishes, or broken glass in the house. These items promote the growth of illnesses and mental tension in the home. All such useless and damaged things should be discarded immediately.
  • Stopped clocks and faulty equipment: Clocks that are stopped signal that your good time has stopped, leading to laziness among family members. Furthermore, malfunctioning electronic equipment also hinders progress in the home. Either the stopped clock must be repaired, or the batteries replaced, and all clutter and non-working electronic equipment must be removed.

What must be done on the first day of Navratri:

On the first day of the festival, the main entrance of the house should be thoroughly cleaned. It is also necessary to draw a swastika sign using turmeric and water at the main entrance. To welcome the Mother, a garland of Amu or Ashoka leaves should be hung on the main door, which promotes peace and tranquility in the home.
