Mura buffalo milk is in demand outside India due to its unique qualities

In India, cattle farming based on buffaloes is a significant source of income for farmers. In many regions of the country, farmers earn a good income from selling milk. However, there are certain breeds of buffaloes known for their high milk productivity, distinct physique, and quality. Among them, the Mura breed is the most well-known, considered one of the most popular dairy buffalo breeds in the country.

The Mura buffalo is valued not only for its milk but also for its strong build, curved horns, and high milk production capacity. This is why it is highly sought after among livestock breeders. The cost of a good and high-yielding buffalo can reach several hundred thousand rupees.

The Mura buffalo usually has a dark black coat. Its horns are small and curved, and its head is relatively small, while its body is sturdy. This breed is mainly found in the states of Haryana and Punjab, but it is also bred in Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and other parts of the country. Mura buffaloes are specifically raised for milk production, which makes this breed attractive to those involved in the dairy business.

To reiterate the description, the Mura buffalo has a dark black color, small curved horns, a small skull, and a strong build. It is common in Haryana and Punjab, as well as in Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan, and its primary breeding purpose is milk production.

The milk yield of a Mura buffalo depends on its breed, diet, age, and level of care. With proper care, it can produce about 10–15 liters of milk per day. Some exceptional individuals can produce even more, although this is not typical for all animals. The milk from this breed is also known for its high fat content. The high fat content in the milk helps in making ghee and other dairy products, which sustains the high demand for Mura buffaloes in the dairy industry.

The price of a Mura buffalo varies depending on the location. It is determined by factors such as the animal's age, health condition, milk productivity, breed purity, and the volume of milk it has previously produced. Generally, a good Mura breed animal can cost anywhere from a few thousand to hundreds of thousands of rupees. More productive and purebred buffaloes sell for more. Although some exceptionally valuable animals are valued even higher, such prices are not common. When purchasing, livestock breeders pay close attention to feeding history, health, and milk production records, not just appearance.

To obtain quality milk, it is crucial to provide the buffalo with a balanced diet. This diet should include green and dry fodder, grains according to needs, and clean water. Furthermore, the animal's habitat must be clean, and during hot weather, it requires protection from the heat. Proper nutrition and care contribute to the animal's good health and increase milk productivity. Nevertheless, since each buffalo's needs are individual, the diet should be adjusted according to its age, weight, and lactation capacity.

Although the Mura buffalo is considered a good breed for the dairy business, profitability depends on numerous variables. One must consider the cost of purchasing the animal, feed expenses, veterinary costs, the selling price of the milk, and the daily volume of milk obtained. If there is access to a good milk market and the animal receives proper care, raising Mura buffaloes can become a profitable venture. However, without careful calculation, buying an expensive animal can lead to losses. Overall, the Mura buffalo is distinguished by its special value due to its milk-producing ability, strong body, and demand in the dairy sector.
