Authorities capture wolf that attacked two people in Greece

A team from Life Wild Wolf, a European project focused on wolf conservation, managed to capture a wolf causing concern near Athens, Greece, after it attacked at least two individuals.

According to the agency France-Presse (AFP), this animal had been repeatedly seen in a semi-urban area of Parnes, a mountain range located near the Greek capital, over the past few months.

On Thursday night, the environmental entities Callisto and the National Organization for Environment and Climate Change (Ofypeka) reported that, after a pursuit lasting several hours, the wolf, which had been worrying residents in areas near Parnes due to its frequent appearances, was anesthetized by Life Wild Wolf specialists.

The organizations mentioned that the animal had been captured previously, in mid-August, in the residential area of Varibobi, located approximately 30 kilometers north of Athens, in response to reports of constant sightings in urban areas.

Although it was released on that occasion, the Greek Ministry of Environment decided that it was necessary to recapture the animal after an incident in which it attacked a man in a forest area in the locality of Kryoneri, which occurred on September 24.

Genetic analyses performed on blood collected from the animal confirmed that it was also responsible for an attack against another man, recorded in the same region on February 14, 2026.

After the capture, the wolf was immediately transported to the facilities of the International Center for Arctouros Environment, located in the northwest of the country, where it will remain permanently under the support of forestry services.

This represents, at minimum, the second case of wolf capture in Greece in a period of less than three months. In mid-August, a she-wolf was captured that was being sought for having attacked and injured a four-year-old child in a region near Thessaloniki, the second largest city in Greece, in the north of the country.
