A series of unexpected victories occurred in the early stages of the WTT China Smash tournament in Beijing

The WTT China Smash tournament in Beijing was marked by a series of significant surprises in the initial stages. In the women's singles category, Thai athlete Orawan Paranang achieved an impressive victory over two-time defending champion Sun Yinsha, defeating her 3:1 in the second round on Wednesday in Beijing.

In the first game, Sun and Paranang exchanged points, and the Chinese number one took the lead in the final moments, winning 11:8. However, Paranang responded strongly in the second game, gaining a 4:0 advantage and continuing to pressure to close out the match with a score of 11:4.

In the third set, the Thai athlete took the lead 9:8, and then won it 12:10 after a tense battle. Following this, she converted match point to take the fourth set 12:10, securing this sensational victory. The Thai qualifier, ranked 101st in the world, advanced to the round of 16, eliminating the second seed Sun, who had previously returned to the top rankings at the beginning of this month.

Paranang's next opponent will be Japan's 14th seed, Honoka Hashimoto. In another important women's singles match, fourth-ranked Kuai Man defeated Zhong Gemana 3:1. In the round of 16, she will face another compatriot, Zhu Sibing.

In the men's singles category, Zhou Qihao faced Xiang Peng in a matchup between Chinese players in the second round. After losing two sets, Zhou managed to recover his position, forcing a deciding fifth set. After saving two match points, he snatched the fifth set 13:11, completing the comeback 3:2, and will meet Tomokazu Harimoto from Japan in the round of 16.

In the women's doubles category, the pair Kuai Man and Wang Manyu defeated Yazzy Liu from Australia and Yuan Wang from Germany 3:0, advancing to the quarterfinals. The Chinese seeded pair started confidently, and Kuai's forehand win earned her a game point, allowing them to win the first set 11:5.

The second set proved much more intense: Kuai and Wang saved a game point before turning the tide and winning 12:10 thanks to another strong forehand from Kuai, doubling their overall advantage to 2:0. A similar pattern was observed in the third set, when Kuai and Wang again saved a game point before holding on to the victory 14:12. The Chinese duo will face compatriots Gao Yusin and Xiang Junlin in the round of eight.

COE Report Reveals Injury Issues in Indian Squad: 32 Players Underwent Rehabilitation

Injury problems are becoming a serious challenge for Indian cricket, as constant player injuries create difficulties for the team management during important tournaments. Important details were revealed in the annual report of the Indian Cricket Council's Centre of Excellence (CoE).

According to the report, between April 2025 and March 2026, 32 leading players of the men's Indian national team underwent rehabilitation after injuries. This included 20 players on central contracts and 12 players from the India-A or target player categories.

As per TOI, the spate of injuries continued even after the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, with at least two players being injured in each series. Shubman Gill, captain of the men's Indian team in Test and ODI formats, and head coach Gautam Gambhir had previously expressed concern over the players' physical fitness issues over the past year. This raises the question of the need for changes in the existing system to protect players from injuries and improve their recovery.

Amidst the rising number of injuries, the BCCI has planned an increase in expenditure for the Centre of Excellence. According to the report, the projected budget for the CoE for the financial year 2026-27 is 127 crore rupees, whereas the actual expenditure in the previous financial year was around 92 crore rupees, indicating a budget increase of approximately 35 crore rupees. These funds cover administrative expenses, training programs, and match-related costs. However, the impact of the increased budget on player fitness and injury prevention will become evident in the future.

Between April 2025 and March 2026, the BCCI-CoE Sports Science Medical Team (SSM) treated and managed injuries for a total of 68 cricketers, including women. Although the report does not provide detailed information on the number or duration of rehabilitation for each player, the most common issue was soft tissue injuries. This category includes muscle and associated tissue damage that can affect players' ability to run, bowl, and move quickly on the field.

As an example of injuries mentioned in the report, Rishabh Pant required treatment after a leg fracture during a match in Manchester in July 2025. It is also reported that Rohit Sharma underwent rehabilitation at the CoE during this period. BCCI has not made an official statement regarding Rohit's treatment. According to the report, Rohit approached the CoE due to a hamstring injury after IPL 2026.

Among the injured players are several well-known names such as Jasprit Bumrah, Washington Sundar, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Harshit Rana, Hardik Pandya, and Prasidh Krishna. The report indicates that Harshit Rana, Hardik Pandya, and Nitish Kumar Reddy spent at least four months at the CoE in the last 18 months. Furthermore, as of September 30, 2026, players such as Virat Kohli, Varun Chakravarthy, Prince Yadav, and Harsh Dubey were included in the list.

The unavailability of key players directly affects team selection and combinations. This issue becomes even more pressing in the case of fast bowlers, as it is crucial to balance their workload between regular matches and training. The report also highlights issues related to the administrative and technical work of the Centre of Excellence. Nitin Patel, Head of Sports Medicine, resigned in March 2025, and the position remained vacant for a long time. BCCI announced recruitment for this position last month. A lack of communication between the national team's SSM division and the CoE's SSM team is also noted. VVS Laxman acts as the main intermediary in contacts between these two structures.

The report states that the national team's fitness coach, Adrian Le Rouxed, proposed some changes to the player workload management process in June 2025, but the CoE was reluctant to deviate from its current system. In this situation, improving coordination between the two divisions could be a decisive factor in enhancing the effectiveness of the player fitness strategy.

Similar situations arose during the COVID-19 pandemic. According to the report, in 2021-22, many players suffered injuries after exiting the bio-bubble. At that time, the situation was brought under control within two to three months. Prior to that, in 2017...

Ugo Monye claims second Springboks team is second strongest in the world despite loss to Wallabies

Former England international player Ugo Monye expressed the opinion that the Springboks are clear favorites to win an unprecedented third consecutive Rugby World Cup. He suggested that South Africa's second team could be considered the second strongest on the planet, even after a recent defeat to the Wallabies.

Speaking to LiveScore Bet, the former winger emphasized the depth of Rassie Erasmus's squad following their 3-1 victory over the All Blacks in a test series. He noted that even the recent error against Australia occurred amid significant player rotation.

Monye stated: 'They are clear favorites, without a shadow of a doubt.' He added that the team aims to achieve something never done before—winning three Rugby World Cups in a row. He also mentioned the recent series against New Zealand, which ended with a 3-1 victory, calling it another telling moment.

Monye stressed that South Africa's huge player reserve sets them apart from all other international rivals. He admitted: 'Honestly, there are parts of me that believe the best team in the world is South Africa, and perhaps the second best team in the world is the second South African team. Their strength is frightening.'

When assessing the main contenders who could challenge the Springboks' defense of the title, Monye named a familiar group of opponents. He noted that New Zealand, England, France, Ireland, and Australia would participate in the title race, calling them teams that could make an impression.

Mark Chapman and Jack Faulkner ruled out of T20 series against India due to injuries

Before the start of the five-match T20 International Championship series between India and New Zealand, the New Zealand team had to face two serious problems. Due to injuries, Mark Chapman and Jack Faulkner will be unable to participate in the entire series. In their place, all-rounder Josh Clark and fast bowler Blair Tickner have been included in the squad.

Chapman was diagnosed with a hamstring injury during a T20 league game in Europe last month, which will prevent him from participating in the upcoming T20 series against India. His next goal is to return to the squad for the ODI matches against India. As for Faulkner, he is struggling with hip flexor issues, and his return date to the field has not yet been determined.

New Zealand's head coach, Rob Walters, expressed regret over the injuries to both players. He noted that he felt sorry for Mark and Jack and wished them a speedy recovery. At the same time, Walters expressed confidence in the experience of Clark and Tickner, noting that their inclusion in the team is a positive development. He also expressed hope that both players would be happy for the opportunity to play in this exciting T20 series.

The series between India and New Zealand will begin on October 22nd in Christchurch. Both teams previously met in the final of the Men's T20 World Cup earlier this year, where India won convincingly by a score of 96 runs.

The New Zealand squad, consisting of 16 players, includes Mitchell Santner (captain), Finn Allen, Michael Bresshaw, Josh Clark, Devon Conway, Jacob Duffy, Loki Ferguson, Matt Henry, Bevan Jabs, Kyle Jamieson, Edmil Milne, Daryl Mitchell, Glenn Phillips, Timifert, Nathan Smith, and Blair Tickner.

The schedule for the India-New Zealand T20 series is as follows: the first T20 will take place on October 22nd in Christchurch; the second T20 on October 24th in Christchurch; the third T20 on October 27th in Wellington; the fourth T20 on October 30th in Auckland; and the fifth T20 is scheduled for November 1st in Hamilton.
