PlayStation transfers over 400 virtual reality patents to Meta

Sony is transferring hundreds of virtual reality-related patents to Meta, the company behind the Quest line of devices. As reported by ZDNet, both companies signed an agreement in December 2025 for the definitive cession of 429 technological registrations.

This move occurs just over three years after the launch of PlayStation VR2 and has raised questions about Sony's future plans in the virtual reality sector. The report details that approximately 43 registrations were transferred specifically between June and September 2026.

The technologies covered by the patents include screen manufacturing methods, various models of glasses and headsets, as well as specific virtual reality applications. It is important to note that these patents were originally registered by PlayStation between 2010 and 2022, covering the development of the brand's two generations of VR equipment.

The agreement totals the transfer of 429 registrations, with 180 of them registered in the United States, while the remaining 213 are linked to international markets such as Japan, China, South Korea, and Europe. To date, neither corporation has made public statements regarding this negotiation.

PlayStation VR2, launched in February 2023, was presented as one of Sony's main bets to expand the experiences offered by the PS5. However, the device faced obstacles in reaching a wider audience. The commercial challenges of the headset were attributed to its initial price of US$550 in the US, the scarcity of exclusive titles, and the decrease in support provided by the manufacturer.

Although Sony made an adapter available to allow the use of PS VR2 on computers, increasing its functionality, the equipment remained focused on a more limited consumer niche. The transfer of these patents to Meta strengthens the impression that Sony is reducing its investment in virtual reality. However, this does not imply that the PlayStation VR line has been formally discontinued.

The company has not yet disclosed a replacement for the PS VR2 nor clarified how this agreement will impact its future projects in the area.

Another relevant aspect is the ability to share these achievements and compare performance with friends.

In comparison, Sony, on its PlayStation 4 (PS4) and PlayStation 5 (PS5) consoles, uses trophies in bronze, silver, gold, and platinum categories, with the latter reserved for those who obtain all others. To access the new Xbox feature, it is essential to be part of the Xbox Insider program, where the tools are still undergoing final approval. Entry is simple, allowing any Xbox player to participate: simply install the Xbox Insider package on the console or the Xbox Insider Hub on PC.
