The death of actor Nana Patekar at the age of 75 has drawn public attention to the issue of sudden cardiac arrest, which is an urgent medical condition where the heart suddenly stops pumping blood effectively and requires immediate resuscitation measures.
Doctors note that in the event of a sudden collapse in an adult, a witness can begin cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) using only chest compressions, without waiting for formal training or rescue breathing procedures, provided the person is unconscious and not breathing normally.
Dr. Rakesh Garg, a professor at AIIMS and a specialist involved in developing Indian CPR guidelines, stated that the probability of survival decreases by 7% to 10% with every minute if no help is provided.
