Cuba's Foreign Minister, Bruno Rodriguez, accused the United States of depriving Cuban children of proper nutrition after a UN resolution was adopted.
Rodriguez stated on social media that the United Nations Human Rights Council had approved a resolution based on a proposal from Cuba and other countries for the first time. This resolution calls for an end to measures that violate international law and affect children's access to nutritious food.
The head of Cuban diplomacy accused the North American government of persistently seeking to 'deprive Cuban children' of this right. He also emphasized that the UN Human Rights Council ruled that the blockade against Cuba violates the right to food.
The Council adopted the resolution titled 'Improving Equal Access of Children to Adequate and Nutritious Food' on Thursday. The document calls on states not to implement measures contrary to international law that restrict children's access to nutritious food. The resolution also supports strengthening international cooperation and technology transfer to combat food access inequality.
Cuba has repeatedly stated that US sanctions are holding thousands of containers of food, medicine, and resources intended for the energy and water sectors in various Caribbean ports. The island is experiencing a deep economic and energy crisis, which Cuban authorities attribute to both internal and external factors, exacerbated, according to Havana, by the oil embargo imposed by the United States since January.
The fuel shortage negatively affects the state economy and contributes to rising prices for basic goods, especially food and medicine in informal markets. In June, the United Nations confirmed that about 20,000 tons of food in Cuba could not be distributed or delivered with significant difficulties and delays due to lack of fuel.
