New documentary series highlights efforts for horse welfare in South Africa

A new four-part documentary titled 'Equine Welfare – A Life Worth Caring For' is being presented, dedicated to the work of caring for horses. The series will premiere on October 8, 2026, on YouTube, Gallop TV, and the Hollywoodbets blog.

This project covers the activities of seven non-profit organizations operating across South Africa. Among them is an initiative that rescues, rehabilitates, and provides shelter for blind, disabled, and abused horses.

These organizations utilize equine therapy to improve the lives of disabled youth and victims of gender-based violence. The series also showcases the remarkable bonds formed between humans and horses, demonstrating how horses help improve the lives of people with physical and mental disabilities, as well as victims of trauma and violence.

Viewers will get a behind-the-scenes look at the work of equestrian centers, horse sanctuaries, riding schools, and post-racing organizations. They will visit these institutions to see the complex work being done and follow them into local communities through aid programs, rescue operations, and educational events.

The series features the following organizations: Coastal Horse Care Unit from KwaZulu-Natal; Highveld Horse Care Unit from Gauteng; Eastern Cape Horse Care Unit; Tom Ro Haven from the Western Cape; BlindLove from the Eastern Cape; South African Riding for the Disabled Association Durban from KwaZulu-Natal; and Hollywoodbets Life After Racing from Ashburton, KwaZulu-Natal.

Viewers are also invited to visit Hollywoodbets Life After Racing—Hollywood Group's own initiative for caring for horses after racing. Located in Ashburton, near Pietermaritzburg in KwaZulu-Natal, this organization focuses on retraining, responsible rehoming, and rehabilitating racehorses, which then find a second career in sports such as polo, show jumping, and eventing.

Devin Heffer, Brand and Communications Manager for the Hollywood Group, highly praised the efforts of these dedicated organizations and welcomed the documentary. He noted: 'What makes this series particularly special is that it goes beyond horse welfare, telling stories about how these wonderful animals also change people's lives, whether through therapeutic riding programs, community support, or simply by providing companionship and healing.'

Heffer added that the group believes the series will help raise awareness and appreciation for the vital work being done to improve the welfare of horses in the country. He concluded: 'It reinforces the commitment of the racing and betting industries to ensuring that horses are cared for throughout their lives.'
