Generation Z engages in side jobs due to financial difficulties, according to a survey

Despite having a main job and regular salary, members of Generation Z seek to earn more by engaging in additional activities. There is a trend toward combining a main job with freelancing, content creation, online work, or starting a small business; this phenomenon is called 'side hustle.'

However, the driving force behind this phenomenon is not only the desire to increase income but also significant financial pressure.

According to the Deloitte study 'Gen Z and Millennials 2026,' one of the main reasons for this mindset among Generation Z is financial problems. In India, 54% of Gen Z members postpone important life decisions due to monetary difficulties. Furthermore, 20% of young people struggle to cover daily expenses.

The problem goes beyond purchasing expensive clothes, traveling, or online shopping; for young people, serious concerns have become buying housing, saving money, and ensuring future financial stability.

Against this financial pressure, the opportunity to earn more becomes an attractive option for young people. Side hustles give them a chance to increase their income by serving as a source of revenue in addition to their main job.

The Deloitte World 2026 report shows that about 30% of Generation Z members work part-time or full-time in additional jobs. The report also notes that financial necessity is one of the main reasons. Nevertheless, more than a third of those engaged in side hustles claim that it helps them acquire new skills and build social connections.

For Generation Z, a side hustle is not just a way to earn more money. It is also a method to try out work that aligns with personal preferences. By engaging in activities outside of their main job, Generation Z members can master new competencies and potentially turn it into a main career in the future.

Thus, the approach of Generation Z is simple: they gain experience and stability from their main job but are not limited to a single source of income. Against the backdrop of rising expenses and financial uncertainty, the side hustle becomes not just a hobby, but a way for many members of Generation Z to increase their earnings.

Reasons for Layoffs Among Generation Z Employees: Business Leaders' Opinions

The modern Generation Z is actively entering the job market after completing their education. However, companies are encountering several criticisms regarding these young specialists. Employers note that many struggle to master job responsibilities, office norms, and professional atmosphere.

According to a survey conducted by a well-known website among about 1000 American business leaders, some shortcomings of graduates starting work in 2024 are beginning to influence companies' hiring decisions. This may affect the employment prospects of future graduates.

After facing various difficulties, young employees cause every sixth manager to hesitate when hiring new graduates. Furthermore, every seventh manager stated that they might completely avoid hiring graduates next year. Approximately three-quarters of the surveyed companies reported that some or even many recently hired graduates do not perform their jobs properly.

The main complaint from employers relates to the lack of enthusiasm and initiative among youth towards work. Fifty percent of business leaders cited this as one of the reasons for problems with new employees. Managers also mentioned other issues, such as non-compliance with office procedures, disorganization in work, and communication difficulties.

Company executives state that they have to deal daily with issues related to the new generation of employees. These issues include being late for work and meetings, inappropriate office attire, and incorrect behavior in the work environment.

More than half of hiring managers believe that university graduates are not ready for the real working world. Over 20 percent claim that some new graduates are unable to cope adequately with the workload. Consequently, some colleges have begun to pay more attention to preparing students for the realities of working life.

For instance, the University of Michigan teaches its students communication skills with professionals. When asked how best to prepare students for hiring, managers responded that a good attitude and proactivity are important. Gwen, an education and career development consultant from Intelligent, emphasizes that Gen Z should pay attention to how her colleagues work and communicate in a new job. This will help her understand the office environment. Additionally, it is important to ask questions independently, express opinions on work, complete tasks on time, and take responsibility when necessary. Thus, in the eyes of companies, not only a diploma but also a good attitude toward work, a desire to learn, and demonstration of initiative are necessary conditions for career advancement.
