Ledgebrook raises $200 million to scale AI-powered insurance platform

Ledgebrook has raised $200 million in equity financing to develop its artificial intelligence-based insurance platform. The funding round was co-led by Allianz X and Rockefeller Capital Management, with participation from existing and new investors. The Boston-based company plans to use the capital to expand its technologies and develop its Blackbird product.

The platform is designed to assist underwriters in processing complex insurance applications. It also handles risk classification and technical tariff calculation. Thanks to Blackbird, assessing specialized risks can take hours instead of weeks, even with a complex risk profile. However, final decisions on cases are still made by experienced underwriters.

This model combines automation with expert judgment, which is particularly useful for businesses that are difficult to insure. Ledgebrook works with general liability, professional liability, and specialized coverage insurance, focusing on medium-sized enterprises in the excess and surplus market. The company's products are distributed exclusively through wholesale brokers.

Ledgebrook positions Blackbird for risks requiring highly specialized underwriting. The platform analyzes applications and determines key risk characteristics, supporting pricing before an experienced underwriter makes a final decision. The company believes that complex risks represent a significant opportunity for AI application.

Unlike many insurers who have focused automation on simpler products, Ledgebrook targets businesses where the underwriter's expertise remains difficult to scale. Guide Caligaris, founder and CEO, stated that the company aims to accelerate the insurance process, emphasizing that complex risks deserve thorough specialized underwriting.

The new funding will be directed towards investments in personnel and technology. Furthermore, Ledgebrook benefits from the growth of the E&S market, as established insurers have tightened their risk appetite in several areas, prompting some companies to move into the E&S channel.

The investment strengthens Allianz X's property and casualty insurance platform in the US. Ledgebrook adds medium-sized general liability risks to the E&S market, complementing Allianz X's existing insurance positions. Separately, Allianz Re has concluded a multi-year reinsurance agreement with Ledgebrook, which will provide support as the company expands its underwriting operations.

Dr. Nazim Tsetin, CEO of Allianz X, noted that the implementation of AI started with simpler insurance risks but believes the greater opportunity lies in complex business that requires scarce underwriting judgment and may suffer from slow decision-making. John Mullen, President of E&S, reported strong multi-year growth in this segment and Ledgebrook's desire to accelerate value for brokers and insured clients.

Ledgebrook was founded in Boston in 2022 by Caligaris, a mathematician and actuary educated at Harvard. The company began operating in insurance in 2023 and is now on track to exceed cumulative written premiums of $1 billion. The company employs about 300 people, including approximately 80 underwriters and 50 engineers, reflecting its technological and insurance expertise. In August 2026, AM Best assigned Ledgebrook Specialty Insurance Company an A- financial strength rating, marking the company's transition into a full-fledged insurance platform.

Since its launch, the company has undergone several funding rounds, including seed, Series B, and Series C. Ledgebrook claims that its technology helps brokers receive faster responses on complex risks, and quicker decision-making facilitates efficient placement of coverage by brokers. The latest funding will allow for further development of Blackbird and expand the company's underwriting capacity. Long-term growth is planned in the specialized insurance market for complex risks, which can be bolstered by support in the form of equity capital and reinsurance from Allianz.
