Xbox Executive clarifies that GTA 6 will not be available for streaming on PC via Xbox Cloud Gaming

Matthew Ball, Xbox Strategy Director, confirmed that GTA 6 will not be accessible for streaming on PC using the Xbox Cloud Gaming service. Furthermore, he clarified that Microsoft does not hold exclusive rights to stream the game.

This information arose after an article in The Verge suggested that Asha Sharma, Xbox CEO, had mentioned in an internal meeting that the company was planning something exclusive for GTA 6, something other platforms would not have. This claim led to the interpretation that there might be an acquisition of exclusive streaming rights, allowing PC and mobile device users to play the title via Xbox Cloud Gaming, even without a native version for those platforms.

However, Ball refuted this interpretation. In a social media post, the executive informed that Xbox is preparing for the launch of GTA 6 on November 19, but reiterated that the game will not be offered exclusively by streaming nor streamed for personal computers.

The statement keeps open the possibility of GTA 6 being released on other cloud gaming services. Platforms such as Amazon Luna and Nvidia GeForce Now, which do not depend on a console to operate, could be alternatives for PC players if they receive the title.

It is relevant to note that GTA 6 will not have a PC version at the time of its release, and Rockstar Games has not yet announced a date for its arrival on this platform. Another aspect raised in the discussion is Rockstar's history with PC releases; for example, Red Dead Redemption 2 eventually reached streaming services after its initial PC launch, albeit under a different strategy.

The launch of GTA 6 also coincides with a change in the Xbox streaming system. Starting in November, Game Pass Ultimate subscribers will have a monthly limit of 15 hours of streaming, with the option to purchase extra hours. Given the long nature of Rockstar's games, this coincidence raises speculation about Microsoft's plans for the title, although there is no confirmation that the two events are linked.

Xbox CEO denies plans to sell division after internal restructuring

Microsoft clarified that it has no intention of selling the Xbox division, according to Asha Sharma, the company's head of gaming. The executive refuted rumors that the brand could be traded during a period characterized by staff cuts, project cancellations, and extensive internal reorganization.

In an interview given to The New York Times, Sharma was directly questioned about the possibility of Microsoft divesting its gaming sector. She assured that Xbox is 'not for sale' and emphasized that it will continue to collaborate with Microsoft on a long-term strategy.

This statement comes amid significant instability in the company's gaming operations, which have undergone substantial changes in recent weeks. Reports indicate that hundreds of employees were recently laid off, with the possibility of further reductions in staff. This process has been classified as one of the largest restructurings ever implemented within Xbox.

The modifications have also affected studio organization. Specifically, the Halo team was relocated to the Activision Blizzard structure, while Obsidian integrated into Bethesda Game Studios, resulting in a decrease in the number of groups directly subordinate to the Xbox division.

Despite these transformations, Sharma expressed her commitment to taking all necessary measures to ensure the business's success. This may include adopting new operating models, establishing partnerships, and other strategic initiatives.

The company's strategy also supports Microsoft's long-term goal for the gaming segment: expanding the reach of the Xbox ecosystem to reach one billion users. Sharma's declaration aims to reduce speculation that the reorganization would be preparation for the sale or dismantling of the division.

The executive reiterated: 'Xbox is not for sale.' However, this does not imply that the current setup will remain, given that recent studio and franchise movements show that Microsoft is changing how it manages its gaming operations. Sharma acknowledged that there is a long way to go but confirmed maintaining a long-term outlook for the venture. Thus, Microsoft signals that Xbox will remain part of its strategy, albeit in a structure different from that presented in recent years.
