SANTACO сообщает, что решение о повышении тарифов на такси после роста цен на топливо еще не принято

The South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) has stated that no final decision has been made regarding potential increases in taxi fares following recent hikes in fuel prices. The council has strongly advised the public and commuters against reacting to rumors or speculation.

SANTACO has decided to conduct additional discussions involving the taxi sector, the fuel industry, and the government due to the recent substantial increases in fuel costs and the ongoing uncertainty concerning fuel expenses.

Дальнейшие консультации

Rebecca Phala, a spokesperson for SANTACO, revealed that this resolution was reached during the council's National Office Bearers (NOB) meeting, which took place in Kempton Park on Tuesday. During this meeting, the leadership assessed how escalating fuel costs affect taxi operators, industry employees, and passengers.

As part of these consultations, SANTACO plans to involve its industry members to evaluate the consequences of the fuel price escalations. Furthermore, they will engage with fuel suppliers and business associates to explore potential mitigation strategies achievable through the industry's combined purchasing power.

The council will also consult with the National Department of Transport and other pertinent governmental bodies to find solutions that can lessen the burden of rising fuel costs on both the taxi industry and the traveling public. Phala emphasized that at present, SANTACO is not issuing any statements about possible fare adjustments.

The council acknowledged that any change in fares directly impacts commuters, leading them to believe that every conceivable option must be examined before a definitive stance is adopted. SANTACO's goal is to establish a fair and sustainable solution that accounts for the financial realities and interests of taxi operators, industry staff, and commuters, especially given the widespread economic strain across various societal sectors.

Рассмотрение вопроса NEC

Phala confirmed that SANTACO will proceed with its consultations and subsequently present the issue to its National Executive Committee (NEC) for further review, which is scheduled for the following day. The council committed to communicating its official position once a consensus decision has been reached.

Therefore, SANTACO appealed to the public and commuters to maintain composure and disregard speculation about fare increases, reiterating that no decision to raise taxi fares has been announced by SANTACO yet.

Цены на топливо достигают рекордных уровней

These developments come after the latest fuel price increases became effective on Wednesday, October 7th. This caused the price of 95 unleaded petrol to reach R30.25 per liter inland and R29.38 along the coast. In inland areas, 93 unleaded petrol rose to R29.88 per liter.

Diesel prices are also hitting record highs; 50ppm diesel increased by R3.24 per liter, and 500ppm increased by R2.84. At the wholesale level, 50ppm diesel will cost R32.80 in Gauteng before retail markups are applied. These recent increases follow a sharp surge in global oil prices, which has been largely fueled by increased tensions in the Middle East.

SANTACO comments on possible taxi fare increases in October due to fuel price crisis

Taxi passengers in South Africa may face increased travel costs if rising operational expenses and fuel prices force certain taxi associations to adjust fares. SANTACO states that no general fare increase has been confirmed, but the associations will consult with passengers before implementing any changes.

SANTACO warned that the taxi industry in South Africa is facing growing pressure due to rising fuel and operating costs, as drivers prepare for a potential record price hike of more than 3 rand per liter in October.

This warning came amid data from the Central Energy Fund indicating a significant rise in the cost of petrol and diesel; potentially, unleaded 95 petrol could increase by more than 3 rand per liter, and diesel fuel faces a similar increase.

Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, Gweed Mantshe, reported that there are currently no plans to mitigate the impact of rising fuel prices on households and businesses.

Mantshe noted: 'Currently, no interventions are planned, partly due to the ongoing volatility of petroleum product prices.' He also emphasized that 'the department continues to administer fuel prices transparently, as prescribed by law.'

Will taxi fares increase?

A SANTACO representative, Rebecca Mmatshihidi Fala, stated that the organization is closely monitoring the situation, but it is too early to speak about taxi fare increases. Fala clarified that the taxi associations have only implemented one fare increase since the start of the fuel price rise in March 2026, while operators are also facing increased costs for maintenance, administrative needs, and other business expenses.

She explained that any decision to raise fares will be made by individual taxi associations based on their operating costs and profit margins, following consultations with passenger organizations. Fala added: 'At this stage, we cannot guarantee whether further fare increases will be necessary. Passengers are already paying significant amounts for public transport, while operators continue to face rising administrative, operational, and business costs.'

Fala also reported that if fare adjustments are considered by individual taxi associations, they will engage with their passenger communities and provide necessary information before implementation. She mentioned that the SANTACO Taxi Fare Index generally does not encourage fare increases of more than 10% at once, unless conditions become exceptionally difficult. Nevertheless, she stressed that a general increase is not being considered, and any adjustment will depend on the circumstances of individual routes.

SANTACO calls for government support

Furthermore, SANTACO appeals to the government to provide fair subsidies for public transport to help alleviate the burden of rising operational costs for both taxis and passengers. The organization stated its readiness to consider temporary state assistance measures.

Fala noted that 'the taxi industry operates in a complex socio-economic environment, and operators cannot indefinitely absorb rising costs for fuel, vehicle maintenance, administrative, and other business expenses, which will ultimately put additional pressure on the sector's sustainability.' She concluded that 'if fare adjustments are introduced by SANTACO affiliated associations, passengers will be engaged and informed accordingly. SANTACO also calls on passengers to maintain understanding and empathy for the challenges faced by the taxi industry during these difficult socio-economic times.'
