Dispute over ball contact in India vs West Indies T20I match leads to Ishan Kishan not being given out

The first match of the five-match T20I series between India and West Indies took place on Tuesday, October 6, at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow. In this encounter, the Indian team won by eight wickets. The Indian squad reached a target of 172 runs, finishing the game in just 14.4 overs, thus taking a 1-0 lead in the series.

Captain Shreyas Iyer played a key role in the victory, scoring 102 runs off 10 fours and 6 sixes in 43 balls.

A major controversy arose during the match concerning the dismissal of Ishan Kishan. Although the West Indies managed to secure a crucial wicket of Ishan Kishan, the third umpire's decision completely changed the situation. Caribbean players, including Matthew Ford, who caught the ball, appeared extremely disappointed with the verdict.

At the start of the game, the Indian team showed a quick start. Abhishek Sharma scored 21 runs off 10 balls. After he and Sandeep Samson (11 runs) were dismissed, Ishan Kishan took responsibility alongside Shreyas Iyer.

In the eleventh over, on the fifth delivery from Shamir Springer, Ishan Kishan attempted to hit the ball over the off-stump. The ball left the edge of the bat and flew towards deep cover, where Matthew Ford quickly dived and caught the ball very close to the ground.

Coach Sami also expressed his dissatisfaction. The West Indies players believed they had taken the wicket of Ishan Kishan. However, the field umpires referred the catch to the third umpire, Rohan Pandit, for review. Upon reviewing the replay, Ford's fingers were visible under the ball, but a small gap between his hand and the ground was also noticed at the moment of the catch.

After analysis from different angles, the third umpire concluded that the ball touched the ground. Consequently, Ishan Kishan was ruled not out. As soon as this decision was known, the disappointment of the West Indies players became evident. Ford sat on the field reacting, holding his head. Other team players also looked surprised by the decision. Coach Darren Sammy also appeared upset by the third umpire's ruling.

This dispute complicated Matthew Ford's position. In the fourteenth over, Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan scored 24 runs off his bowling. Shortly after, West Indies had another opportunity. Shamir Joseph failed to catch Shreyas Iyer. Taking advantage of this chance, the Indian captain completed his century milestone. The sequence of opportunities completely dashed West Indies' hopes of a comeback.

Changes in West Indies squad before T20 series: batsman who scored 239 runs called up

Tension has increased within the West Indies team ahead of the five-match T20 series against India. Young batsman and wicketkeeper Joel Andrew sustained a finger injury during the third ODI match of the series, played in Mullumpura, and has not yet fully recovered.

During the 36th over, an attack by India, a ball bowled by Gudakesh Motie, struck Joel Andrew's finger while he was catching the ball towards the cover. He subsequently had to leave the field. Andrew was taken to the hospital for examination, but X-rays and scans did not reveal any fractures. Nevertheless, he could not immediately return to the field and did not participate in the West Indies' chase for a record score. The medical team continues to monitor the condition of his injury.

Jangu's Form

Middle-order batsman Amir Jangu has been included in the T20 squad as a replacement for Joel Andrew. However, Joel Andrew has not been completely ruled out of the series; the West Indies medical staff is closely monitoring his condition, and he still has a chance to play. Left-handed batsman Jangu is currently in excellent form.

The recently concluded three-match ODI series against India was very memorable for Amir Jangu. In the first match of the series, the 29-year-old Jangu was not dismissed and scored 58 runs. In the second match, he showed brilliant play, scoring 114 runs. His form continued in the third match, where he contributed 67 runs. Thus, Jangu scored a total of 239 runs across the three matches, becoming the third-highest scorer in the India-West Indies ODI series, behind Indian captain Shubman Gill and West Indies captain Shai Hope.

Amir Jangu debuted in international cricket in December 2024. To date, he has played seven international T20 matches, scoring 163 runs at an average strike rate of 120.74. He can also play as a wicketkeeper, giving West Indies an additional option for squad selection.

Updated West Indies T20 Squad: Shai Hope (Captain), Roston Chase, Matthew Ford, Shimron Hetmyer, Akil Hussain, Amir Jangu, Sharme Joseph, Gudakesh Motie, Kimo Paul, Kamil Purran, Rovmen Powell, Sherfane Rutherford, Quentin Sampson, Romario Shepherd, and Sharme Springer.

After losing the ODI in Mullumpur, captain Shubman Gill expressed dissatisfaction with the team's play and warned the players

In the final match of the three-match ODI series between India and West Indies, held at the Maharaja Yadvindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullumpur on Saturday (October 3rd), the West Indies team won by five wickets.

Captain Shai Hope scored an unbeaten 162 runs, despite a hamstring injury, which helped the West Indies achieve an impressive total of 352 runs in just 10 overs after the game concluded.

After the match, Indian captain Shubman Gill commented on the reasons for the defeat, expressing serious concern about the quality of fielding and how the team handles the over-finish. Gill admitted that the Indian team's fielding did not meet expectations ahead of the World Cup.

During the game, the Indian squad dropped around six to seven catches. According to the captain, losing such opportunities is worrying for any team. He noted: 'There were many good moments, but there is definitely room for improvement in certain areas. Our fielding could have been better. We dropped about 6-7 catches. This is not a good sign before the World Cup.'

The main problem, in the opinion of the Indian captain, was the performance during the final overs. He stated that the team lacks clarity on when to attack and when to employ defensive tactics in the field. Shubman added: 'We need to work on our end-of-match play. When we bowl in the last overs, we are unclear whether we are attacking or defending.'

The Indian captain also mentioned that even if five or six opposing players are out, the team struggles to determine field placements and bowling strategies. Sometimes the strategy for the end of the match begins too early, when it might have required mid-game play.

The biggest contributor to India's loss was West Indies captain Shai Hope. He scored his 21st century in ODIs and secured a memorable victory for the team. This was the largest successful run chase for the West Indies in ODIs. It was Hope's second consecutive stoic innings; previously, he had also scored a century in a match in Guwahati, and in the third match, he surpassed it, dashing India's hopes.

After the game, Shai Hope shared an interesting secret about his brilliant innings. He revealed that a conversation with former Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni helped him improve his approach to the game. Hope said: 'I had a good talk with the great player MS Dhoni. He told me that you always have more time than you think. So I don't focus too much on the result.'

Hope reported that he now tries to focus on the process rather than the final outcome of the match. His attention is focused on understanding the circumstances, breaking down his innings into small parts, and finding suitable moments to score boundaries at the end of the match.
