How to reuse eggshells: five unusual uses from fertilizer to dishwashing

In many homes, people are accustomed to throwing eggshells directly into the trash after making an omelet, considering them mere waste. However, many are unaware of the useful properties of these shells. Eggshells are rich in calcium, allowing them to be used for various needs—from improving soil for plants to cleaning the house.

If you prefer reusing household waste or want to care for plants without significant expense, eggshells can be very useful. Let's look at ways to use them instead of discarding them.

Ways to Reuse Eggshells

1. As a natural plant fertilizer: Eggshells are a good source of calcium. They should be thoroughly dried and ground into a fine powder, then mixed with potting soil. Over time, the shell decomposes in the soil, gradually supplying calcium, which positively affects plant growth. You can also prepare a liquid fertilizer by mixing the shells with vinegar. Calcium is especially important for plants such as tomatoes and peppers. It is important to understand that this is a source of slow-release nutrition, not a quick fix.

2. Preventing pests in pots: If your plants have pests, such as snails or slugs, eggshells can help. Instead of grinding the shells into a fine powder, they should be slightly crushed and sprinkled around the base of the plant on the soil. The sharp and rough parts of the shell create a natural barrier that prevents pests from reaching the plant, thus avoiding the use of chemical pesticides.

3. Adding to home compost: Eggshells can also be included in kitchen waste when creating compost. Although they do not decompose as quickly as other organic waste, they gradually release calcium into the compost. For better absorption and mixing in the compost, it is recommended to grind the shells beforehand rather than adding them in large pieces.

4. Cleaning burnt and greasy dishes: Eggshells have an interesting application in kitchen hygiene. If food has dried on dishes or a stubborn grease film has formed, clean and finely ground shells can be used for scrubbing. Mix the shells with a small amount of water to form a paste and gently scrub the dishes. Their roughness helps remove ingrained dirt. However, care should be taken not to use them on fragile or easily scratched surfaces.

5. Use in pet food: Finely ground eggshells can be added to dog and chicken feed. The calcium contained in them is beneficial for strengthening bones and teeth, and it promotes egg-laying in hens. It is crucial that the shells are thoroughly cleaned and turned into a fine powder so that sharp pieces do not cause harm.
