SpaceX plans to raise $40 billion to acquire Nvidia chips

SpaceX intends to raise $40 billion, which is equivalent to approximately R$ 214 billion, through a financing operation. This initiative, which will be led by the investment manager Apollo Global Management, aims to acquire chips manufactured by Nvidia, as reported by the Financial Times last Tuesday (6).

Sources close to the matter informed the newspaper that Elon Musk's company intends to use these funds to finance a substantial order of Nvidia chips. The structure of this operation should be based mainly on debt.

Specifically, SpaceX seeks about $10 billion (about R$ 53.5 billion) through bank loans, supplementing this with another $30 billion (approximately R$ 160.5 billion) in investment-grade securities. Apollo will be responsible for conducting this operation and assisting in distributing the debt among various investors.

This move positions SpaceX at the center of the competition for artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure. The total amount sought, $40 billion, constitutes one of the largest fundraising efforts aimed at purchasing AI components. Nvidia is the supplier of essential processors for heavy computing tasks, including the training and execution of AI systems.

While SpaceX, under Elon Musk's leadership, expands its technological activities beyond the space sector, Musk also maintains projects focused on AI. The proposed financing will enable the company to secure a large quantity of Nvidia chips, combining bank loans with debt negotiated with investors. Reuters reported that SpaceX, Apollo, Nvidia, and Pimco did not issue immediate comments in response to the agency's requests for clarification. The completion of this transaction is expected in 2027.
