The practical implementation phase of a large-scale modernization project has begun at Urgench International Airport. This project is being implemented in the format of public-private partnership and includes the construction of a new passenger terminal, the upgrade of airfield infrastructure, as well as the creation of additional facilities for serving both passengers and cargo.
The partner in this project is the South Korean company Incheon International Airport Corporation. The total cost of the planned work is estimated at 242 million US dollars, and the project completion date is set for the end of 2028.
Currently, site preparation is underway at the location of the former passenger terminal: the area has been cleared and leveled, after which piling has begun to strengthen the foundation of the future building. Sherzadbek Seitniazov, Manager of the Property Relations Department of Uzbekistan Airports, reported that following site preparation, the foundation will be laid, and then the construction of the terminal itself will begin.
The planned area of the new passenger terminal will be approximately 39 thousand square meters, which significantly exceeds the area of the current terminal, which is about 9.2 thousand square meters. Capacity will also increase: from the current 300 passengers per hour, it will rise to 1,300 people per hour. The airport's annual capacity is expected to grow from 1.2 million to 3.5 million passengers.
The new terminal will separate international and domestic flights. It will be equipped with modern check-in and screening areas, baggage claim areas, as well as VIP and CIP lounges, Duty-Free shops, and dining facilities. Passengers will have access to modern technologies, including online check-in and automation of some baggage handling processes. The architectural design of the terminal will combine modern solutions with references to the culture and architecture of Khorezm.
The modernization affects more than just the terminal. The airport will also expand the apron and increase the number of aircraft parking spaces. Oibek Matkarimov, Director of Urgench International Airport, specified that the construction of parking stands is about 85 percent complete. There are currently 18 parking spots, and after the completion of the work, the number is planned to increase to 25.
Additionally, the construction of additional taxiways, as well as high-speed and turning sections, is planned. The airfield will receive a modern CAT-II category lighting system, which will allow for aircraft landings in difficult weather conditions and low visibility. The project also includes the construction of a new runway with a length of 3,300 meters, which will ensure the ability to serve various types of aircraft, including large ones.
Another significant addition will be a cargo terminal, which did not previously exist at Urgench Airport. The existing building will be renovated and converted for the needs of the cargo terminal, with a plan to increase the volume of cargo processing to 10 tons daily. Within the framework of the project, it is also planned to build catering facilities, a complex for specialized transport, a technical service center, and a garage for snow removal equipment.
During the project implementation, there is a plan to actively borrow experience from Incheon International Airport Corporation. Uzbek specialists have already visited South Korea to study modern airport service and operation technologies. Special emphasis is placed on passenger comfort, reducing the time spent on all procedures, and ensuring accessibility for people with disabilities. Both local construction companies and workers, as well as foreign specialists, will participate in the project.
After the modernization is completed, Urgench International Airport will have modern infrastructure and a terminal, which will allow for a significant increase in throughput and improved capabilities for servicing aircraft and passengers.
