Suryakumar Yadav wanted to play in Ranji but was not selected for the Mumbai team

Former captain of the Indian T20 team Suryakumar Yadav wished to play for the Mumbai team throughout the 2026-27 Ranji Trophy season, but he was not included in the squad. There were many discussions about Suryakumar's possible return to dominant cricket, as he had not participated in 'red ball' format games for a long time.

Suryakumar wanted to be available to play for Mumbai for the entire Ranji season to maintain his form in dominant cricket. Nevertheless, his name is absent from the squad announced by the Mumbai Cricket Association. The last Ranji Trophy match Suryakumar played took place in February 2025 against Vidarbha in Nagpur.

According to Cricbuzz, Suryakumar sent a message to the selectors expressing his desire to be included in the team. However, the selection committee decided not to include him in this match. The same report notes that selector Ayush Mhatre is being considered as a potential future captain. The leadership qualities of this 19-year-old player make him a suitable option for long-term plans. Mhatre, who won the India U-19 World Cup under his guidance, has played only 13 first-class matches in the last two years.

Sidhesh Lad has been appointed as captain, and Ayush Mhatre has been given the duties of vice-captain. Mumbai's chief selector Rajesh Pawar explained the reason for excluding Suryakumar from the squad by stating that they wanted the former Indian captain to first regain rhythm in 'red ball' cricket before returning to the team. Pawar told Cricbuzz: 'He is clearly a big-match player and has always performed well for Mumbai. We just want him to play a few 'red ball' matches to regain his rhythm, and then he can join the team.' He added that 'Suryakumar has not played in 'red ball' format matches for the last 18 months.'

Earlier, the Indian team won the T20 World Cup in 2026 under Suryakumar Yadav's leadership, after which he was dropped from the Indian team. The Mumbai team is one of the most successful teams in the country in the Ranji Trophy, having won the trophy 42 times. Consequently, the absence of such an experienced batsman as Suryakumar became a topic of discussion.

Mumbai will begin its tournament journey with a four-day match against Chandigarh, which starts on October 11. There is a possibility that this match will be held at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Mumbai and Chandigarh are in Group A Elite, which also includes Haryana, Rajasthan, Railways, Tamil Nadu, and Uttarakhand.

The Mumbai Ranji Trophy squad includes: Sidhesh Lad (captain), Ayush Mhatre (vice-captain), Shams Mulani, Yashvi Singh Yaswal, Tanush Kotian, Atharv Ankolkar, Divyansh Saxena, Tushar Deshpande, Mushir Khan, Mohit Awasthi, Sarfaraz Khan, Sylvester Disuja, Suved Parkar, Omkar Tarmale, Akash Anand (wicketkeeper), Hardik Tamore (wicketkeeper).

Indian team to face Afghanistan in Asian Games 2026 quarter-final in Japan

As part of the men's cricket tournament at the Asian Games 2026 in Japan, the Indian team will play against Afghanistan in the quarter-final on September 28 (Monday). This match is scheduled for 10 am Indian time at the Korogi Sports Park in Nishine.

Previously, India defeated Afghanistan in a three-match T20 series with a score of 3:0. Now the teams will meet again, but this time in the Asian Games playoffs.

India entered this tournament fully prepared, aiming to win the gold medal for the second consecutive time. Meanwhile, Afghanistan sent its second team to participate in the Asian Games. This team includes six players who have not yet debuted internationally.

In Afghanistan's 15-man squad for the Asian Games, only captain Darwish Rasooli and Abdullah Ahmadzai were in the team that participated in the recent tour of India. Well-known players such as Rashid Khan, Rahmanullah Gurbaz, and Mohammad Nabi are not included in this squad. Instead of Nabi, his 20-year-old son Hasan Isahil was included in the team. The total experience of Afghanistan's 15 players in T20 International is 262 matches, while the 15 players from India have a combined total of 872 T20 International matches.

The young batsman Vaibhav Suryavanshi will receive the most attention in this match. Although India has a strong batting line-up, the coaching staff may consider giving the 15-year-old Vaibhav a chance in such a major tournament as the Asian Games. However, since Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson demonstrated excellent play in the series against Afghanistan, it will not be easy to exclude anyone from the starting lineup. If Vaibhav gets a chance, it might require changes in the team's batting line-up.

In a friendly match against Japan, India rested Jasprit Bumrah, replacing him with Arshdeep Singh and Yash Thakur, who took responsibility for fast bowling. Now, in such an important match as the quarter-final, there is a possibility of Bumrah's return. Consequently, the coaching staff will have to decide whom to drop between Arshdeep Singh and Yash Thakur.

For spin bowling, options like Ravi Bishnoi, Axar Patel, and Washington Sundar are available.

Afghan all-rounder Ismat Alam may also play a key role against India. The 24-year-old Ismat performed brilliantly in the Spagija Cricket League, scoring 294 runs and taking 9 wickets. He also made his mark in Test matches. In his Test debut, he played a crucial role in Afghanistan's victory over Zimbabwe, scoring a century in the lower order.

In Afghanistan's previous match against Nepal, Faisal Shinojada made his T20 International debut. He was one of the batsmen who scored runs alongside Najibullah Jadaran.

Forecasts suggest heavy rains are expected in Nishine on Monday, which could lead to the match being postponed. In that case, India, due to its higher ranking in the ICC T20I rankings, would advance to the semi-finals. The last two matches played at this venue were also interrupted by rain.

Possible starting lineup for India in the match: Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson (as wicketkeeper), Ishan Kishan, Shreyas Iyer (captain), Tilak Verma, Axar Patel, Shivam Dube, Washington Sundar, Ravi Bishnoi, Arshdeep Singh, and Jasprit Bumrah.

Possible starting lineup for Afghanistan in the match: Mohammad Akram, Hasan Isahil, Karim Janat, Darwish Rasooli (captain), Najibullah Jadaran, Mohammad Ishaq (as wicketkeeper), Ismat Alam, Nangeyalia Khoti, Abdullah Ahmadzai, Faridoun Daudzai, and Arrab Gul.
