The Indian Energy Exchange (IEX) recorded an electricity trading volume of 39.7 billion units (BU) in the second quarter of the fiscal year 2026-27 (Q2 FY27). This figure showed a 12.7% increase compared to the same period last year, attributed to sustained high electricity demand in the country.
During the quarter, the average clearing price in the Day-Ahead Market (DAM) increased by 46% year-on-year, reaching 5.7 rupees per unit. Similarly, the average price in the Real-Time Market (RTM) rose by 49%, amounting to 5.2 rupees per unit. Total energy consumption in India in the second quarter was 502 BU, which is 11.5% more than the previous year.
In the first half of the fiscal year 2027, IEX registered an electricity trading volume of 77.2 BU, representing a 14.2% increase compared to the previous year. The trading volume on RTM during this period reached 32.5 BU, showing a growth of 16.5%.
In September alone, the electricity trading volume on the exchange increased by 10.4% year-on-year, reaching 12.2 BU, while the RTM volume grew by 10.6% to 5.3 BU. Furthermore, on September 26, IEX recorded its highest ever RTM trading volume of 315 million units (MU).
According to government data, peak electricity demand in India in September reached 269 gigawatts (GW). Energy consumption in September was 162 BU, which is 11% higher than last year. High energy demand led to a 281% year-on-year increase in purchase bids in the DAM segment.
The average clearing price in the DAM segment more than doubled, rising by 105% to 7.3 rupees per unit. The average clearing price in RTM increased by 108% to 6.9 rupees per unit.
In Q2 FY27, the DAM volume, including the high-priced Day-Ahead Market, was 14,855 MU, which is 2.2% more than 14,534 MU the previous year. In September, the volume in this segment increased by 0.5% to 4,251 MU.
The RTM volume for the quarter was 16,490 MU, demonstrating a year-on-year growth of 10.5%. In September, the RTM volume rose to 5,294 MU compared to 4,786 MU in the corresponding month last year.
The 'Contingency and Term-Ahead Market' (Day-Ahead Contingency and Term-Ahead Market), which includes contracts up to three months (high-priced term-ahead, intraday, contingency, daily, weekly, and monthly), recorded a volume of 5,477 MU in Q2 FY27, which is 101.5% more than the previous year. In September, the volume in this market more than doubled, reaching 1,939 MU compared to 967 MU the previous year.
The IEX Green Market, which includes the 'Green Day-Ahead' and 'Green Term-Ahead' segments, showed a volume of 2,863 MU for the quarter, a decrease of 5.8% year-on-year. In September, the volume fell by 32% to 737 MU, however, the weighted average price in the 'Green Day-Ahead' market increased by 56.3% to 4.9 rupees per unit.
A total of 1.527 million Renewable Energy Certificates (REC) were traded in Q2 FY27, which is 65.5% less than the previous year. In September, 525,000 REC were sold, a decrease of 16.2% due to lower participation, reported the exchange.
