WhatsApp will block access on cell phones with outdated operating systems

WhatsApp will implement an access block for cell phones using outdated versions of both Android and iOS. This determination is imposed by Meta's servers and prevents users from accessing their accounts until the device's operating system is updated.

The change was detected by the specialized portal WABetaInfo and is being rolled out progressively to certain users. When trying to use WhatsApp on an incompatible device, the user is notified with the message: 'Update your phone software to log in again.' This notification is mandatory and instructs the user to check the device settings and install any available update.

This procedure suggests an intention to force continuous maintenance of updates on devices, given that there are already limitations for older devices; currently, downloading WhatsApp from official stores is restricted to smartphones with versions higher than Android 6.0 or iOS 15.1. Although the distribution of these restrictions is happening gradually for Android and iOS users, WhatsApp has not officially specified which versions will be affected.

According to the site, this measure aims to ensure that the application operates in an environment that has modern security mechanisms. For example, end-to-end encryption does not protect against leaks of information displayed on the screen or stored on the device if the phone is compromised.

The warning issued by WhatsApp alerts that old systems can expose the phone to malware attack risks. If an intruder manages to compromise the phone's operating system, they may gain access to data before or after it is protected by the application's encryption.

Regarding security within the application, the company has been introducing other features focused on preventing messenger fraud. In August, WhatsApp added features such as new access key options and expanded the two-step verification system, allowing for the definition of an alphanumeric code. Furthermore, Meta invests in artificial intelligence to identify fraudulent messages and warn potential victims.
