Pitru Paksha 2026: Shraddha Ritual on Ekadashi, Time and Method for Performing Pindana and Tarpana

During the ongoing Pitru Paksha, special importance is given to performing the rituals of Shraddha, Tarpana, and Pindana for ancestors. According to the schedule, Shraddha will take place on Ekadashi on October 6th. This ritual is dedicated to bringing peace and liberating the souls of deceased ancestors, regardless of the month they passed away, whether it was in the waning or waxing lunar phase.

The fast of Indira Ekadashi is also observed on this day. According to the Hindu Panchang, the date Ashwin Krishna Ekadashi will begin on October 6th at 02:07 AM and conclude on October 7th at 00:34 AM. Thus, Ekadashi Shraddha will be performed on Tuesday, October 6th. The best time for performing the Shraddha ritual is considered to be Kutup Muhurta, which will last from 11:46 AM to 12:33 PM on October 6th.

A person performing Shraddha on Ekadashi must start the day with a bath before sunrise and then wear clean clothes. Before beginning the ritual, one must purify oneself and reverently remember their ancestors. Then, one should sit facing south and offer pindas prepared from barley, rice, black cumin, milk, ghee, and honey, praying for the peace of their souls.

After this, the Tarpana of ancestors is performed using water, Kusha grass, barley, and black cumin in the hands, while maintaining respect and devotion to the memory of the ancestors. Next, a feast must be arranged for animals such as cows, crows, dogs, ants, and fish. It is also recommended to leave grain and water respectfully under a peepal tree. After this, food should be offered to poor Brahmins. Sattvic food, excluding onion and garlic, is prepared for Shraddha, including kheer, puri, and vegetable dishes. Concluding the ritual, donations should be made and alms given to the poor according to one's means.
