The first-ever Kingsmead Cricket Lit Fest will be held at the legendary Kingsmead cricket ground in Durban. The event is scheduled for Wednesday, October 7, 2026, and will run from 09:30 to 18:30.
This festival will be the world's first literary event dedicated exclusively to the game of bat and ball. It will transform the iconic Kingsmead stadium from a sporting arena into a venue for literary gatherings, bringing together renowned authors, iconic players, and devoted fans to celebrate cricket literature.
Kingsmead Literature Festival
The venue, Kingsmead, holds special significance as it hosted the legendary Test match of 1939 and the first post-apartheid match between South Africa and India in the democratic era. Now, instead of fences, there will be bookshelves, allowing for a unique celebration.
The festival program includes several distinguished participants. Among them is the legendary South African batting maestro Barry Richards, considered one of the most elegant and powerful players in history. Also speaking will be Booker Prize laureate Shehan Karunaratne from Sri Lanka, who will discuss his novel inspired by cricket, 'Chinaman: The Legend of Pradeep Mathew.'
In addition, there will be cricket sessions where former selectors Linda Zondi and Enver Mall will discuss fifteen players who should be selected to achieve glory in the 2027 Cricket World Cup at home.
Visitors can enjoy a day filled with panel discussions, autograph sessions, and deep debates. The topics discussed will cover both cricket fans' memories and the sport's profound cultural impact. The festival will appeal to both traditionalists who value long-format matches and modern fans interested in the dynamic short format of the game.
