A young Indian man working in America applied a technological solution to reduce the distance between himself and his mother, which attracted the attention of social media users. He set up an old laptop and a large screen in his mother's house for a round-the-clock video call.
Harsh Savargaonkar shared the story of this unique device on the social network X. Harsh stated in his post that it was particularly difficult for him to leave his mother for work. As a result, he installed an old Linux-powered laptop and a large screen on the dining table at home.
This laptop remains constantly in video call mode, allowing his mother to see his face on the screen regardless of where Harsh is in America. The purpose of this device is not for them to constantly talk to each other.
According to Harsh, they do not need to communicate continuously. Sometimes his mother is busy with her own affairs, and Harsh is working. However, when his mother looks at the screen, she sees her son, and Harsh can observe his mother.
The most interesting part of this invention is the use of artificial intelligence. Harsh reported that he used the AI tool Cloud to create scripts that help manage some technical issues that arise during video calls.
For example, if the laptop or browser freezes, the system attempts to reconnect to the call. If the Wi-Fi connection drops, the system also tries to restore the connection. Furthermore, if the laptop shuts down, the mother only needs to press the power button to resume the connection.
Thus, Harsh did not just start a video call; he tried to create a system that would operate as autonomously as possible.
Harsh also shared a very touching moment related to this setup. He recounted that if his mother gets up around three in the morning to drink water, she can see her son working on the screen. She can briefly look at the screen and say 'hello' to him before going back to sleep. This small detail elevates the entire story beyond a simple technological experiment.
Despite the thousands of kilometers separating them, the mother and son feel like they are in the same place.
In his post, Harsh noted that they do not talk all day. But whenever their eyes fall on the screen, they can see each other. According to him, he can work somewhere outside the house, while his mother does her things at home. Both are busy with their lives, but the screen maintains a kind of presence between them.
Sharing this experience, he wrote: 'Thank you, technology.'
After the post was published, social media users highly praised this idea. Many called it a touching way for people living far from family. Some users asked if he had published the code or script for this system so others could try it. One user called it an incredibly beautiful idea and emphasized that this attempt to stay connected with family while living in another country is special.
However, some people also questioned why such a complex mechanism was needed, given the existence of simpler options like surveillance cameras or baby monitors. Nevertheless, the uniqueness of this story lies not so much in the technical trick, but in the feeling that motivated Harsh to create this system—the ability to feel close to his mother in her daily life while being far away.
