Study shows ancient inhabitants of Xinjiang burned hemp in smoking chambers

Chinese researchers studied a wooden smoking chamber discovered in the burial site of the ancient Zhouhu culture. The analysis indicated that between the 5th and 3rd centuries BCE, inhabitants of Xinjiang used this object to burn various plants.

According to the results of chemical analyses conducted, hemp and wormwood were identified among the burned plants. The authors reported these findings in a publication placed in the scientific journal npj Heritage Science.
