Proteas fast bowler Anrich Nortje expresses delight at the prospect of returning to the team to participate in Test matches after a long break. He admitted that he feels 'shivers' at this opportunity.
Nortje last played in Test format in 2023 against West Indies. He noted that returning to the red ball format has been a long-term goal. Although he spent most of recent years playing T20, he quietly worked on improving his skills in the Test format and prepared for his return.
Recently, Proteas head coach Shukri Conrad included Nortje in the squad ahead of the three-match series against Australia, which starts Friday at the Kingsmead stadium in Durban.

Nortje shared his thoughts on the return, saying: 'It's been several years. There was always a plan to come back, but it took a little longer than I hoped.' He added that it is very pleasant to play with the red ball again, to be with teammates, and to return to that atmosphere. He noted that the environment is quite relaxed right now, but he is confident that the situation will become more active soon.
For Nortje, returning to Tests is not just another chance to play for Proteas; it is a format he has always wanted to participate in and which has remained an important motivation throughout his career.
Squad Announcement - First Test
The South African men's selection committee presented a preliminary list of 18 players today for the first Dafabet Test match against Australia, scheduled from October 9 to 13 at the Hollywoodbets Kingsmead stadium in Durban. The only player in the squad who has not yet played internationally is batter Marques Ackerman of Hollywoodbets Dolphins, who receives his first Test call-up after impressive form for the South Africa 'A' team.
Fast bowler Kagiso Rabada is also included in the squad, continuing his recovery from a right hamstring injury. However, seven other players, including Ottneil Baartman, Kwena Maphaka, and Lungi Ngidi, were not included in the list as they are undergoing rehabilitation after hamstring injuries. Gerald Coetzee (Momentum Multiply Titans), Anrich Nortje (Hollywoodbets Dolphins), and Dane Paterson (YesPlay Cobras) have returned to the squad.
The Proteas team is suffering from injuries among fast bowlers, and Kagiso Rabada's status remains uncertain despite his inclusion in the preliminary squad. Lungi Ngidi, Kwena Maphaka, and Ottneil Baartman are excluded due to hamstring injuries.
Commenting on his return, Nortje stated: 'Actually, I feel shivers, as you say. I think it's something really special.' He added that he has seen that captain's badge at home many times over the years, and that is something he wants to achieve again. He emphasized that in childhood, he wanted to play in this format, and it serves as motivation during training, allowing him to focus on skill execution rather than T20 difficulties.
Nortje also mentioned that his recent preparation has focused on the red ball format. He has worked hard on increasing his bowling volume and honing his red ball skills. He has collaborated closely with his long-time coach Piet Botha, and also used video footage to analyze his technique and identify areas for improvement. He even set up a tripod himself to record his training sessions to perfect his game.
He noted that a lot of effort was put into maximizing the effectiveness of the red ball and improving his qualification. He aims not just to improve his skills, but to rise above the level he reached. He believes he was missing one or two things that he would like to fix. He highly praised the team's progress under Coach Shuks, calling the upcoming series important. He expressed strong enthusiasm, and if he manages to wear the captain's cap, that will be his main wish, but he is happy just to be in the tour with the team, rather than at home.
