Recycling center in Angatuba accumulates mountain of waste, causing concern among residents

The recycling materials collection center located on the banks of the Guarare River in Angatuba (São Paulo state) has accumulated a large amount of waste in the open air, which is causing anxiety among rural residents of the municipality.

According to the city hall, previously material collection was carried out by an association in cooperation with the municipal administration, which transported raw materials from specific points in the city. However, since 2025, collection has switched to compactor trucks due to financial difficulties.

The municipal administration claims that due to difficulties in separating materials in the compactors, the association was dumping garbage and recyclables in the same location.

In an interview with TV TEM, Angatuba's environmental secretary, Bruna Andrade, explained that the company received notifications, but because there was no solution to the problem, a contract was concluded with a new association. She assured that the service would be normalized by October 15th.

Andrade stated: 'The city hall provided trucks and thus ensured all logistics for part of the material, delivering it to the site. The 'mountain' continues to form, and the association, which is not commercial, was notified. We wanted them to legalize themselves before the mayor through an agreement. After the fifteenth, there will be no more garbage there.'

In its statement, the State Environmental Company of São Paulo (Cetesb) reported that it had not received complaints about this situation. Nevertheless, it was announced that a team would be sent to the site for inspection, after which appropriate measures would be determined.
