85-year-old woman with amputated legs votes in wheelchair in São José

An 85-year-old woman who lost both legs after suffering a Stroke (CVA) in 2025 exercised her right to vote using a wheelchair in the city of São José.

Originally from Três Corações, Minas Gerais, she participated in the elections for the first time in the municipality of São José. In conversation with Rede Vanguarda, the retired teacher emphasized the importance of being aware and participating in the electoral process.

She stated: «It is very good for us to be conscious and participate in the election. We are part of this. And we cannot miss it, right? Of course. As long as I have a mind, as long as I am thinking, I make sure to come and vote».

Maria Lúcia Reginato attended the Escola Natural Vivência, located in Vale dos Pinheiros, in São José, accompanied by her niece, Luciene Reginato Chagas. The niece mentioned that the family was apprehensive about the aunt's move but was concerned about preserving her autonomy and citizenship.

Luciene Reginato Chagas reported: «Even though she has both legs amputated, when she came [to live in São José], we were very worried about maintaining her citizenship and autonomy in her choice, since she is a conscious, oriented person».

The elderly woman had requested the transfer of her voter registration, stating: «I am inaugurating my voter registration».
