Volvo extended brand registration in Russia; other brands are considering market re-entry

The Swedish company Volvo has registered its trademark in Russia for a period until 2035. According to Rospatent data, the application was submitted by Volvo Trademark Holding AB in December 2025, and the mark protection will be valid until December 2035.

This mark covers automobiles, engines, vehicles, as well as repair and maintenance services. Previously, the company suspended its trading and production activities in Russia in 2022.

Some major brands that left the Russian market have been trying to maintain or re-register their trademarks in recent years. Among them, Nike extended the validity of its Nike Aeroswift, Air Jordan, and SNKRS marks in Russia until 2036 in 2026. Additionally, the Japanese company Nikon registered the trademark NIS Elements.

There are also examples of companies returning to the Russian market. The KGM brand, previously known as SsangYong from South Korea, resumed official trade in Russia in March 2025. Currently, more than 50 official dealers operate in the country.

The situation with Toyota proved more complex. The company 'SP Business Car', associated with Toyota, began selling new Toyota cars in 2025, but Toyota Motor reported no plans to restore official imports into Russia. Cars are arriving through parallel imports.

At the same time, some firms, such as Renault, McDonald's, and Henkel, retained the right to purchase assets upon exiting Russia. However, their full return is complicated by sanctions, new market competition, and conditions set by Russia.
