The global animal welfare organization FOUR PAWS urges South Africans to embrace the theme 'See the world through their eyes' in observance of World Animal Day, celebrated today, October 4th.
FOUR PAWS Director, Fiona Miles, emphasized that World Animal Day serves as a reminder that all animals deserve to live free from suffering. This year's theme called on people to look beyond their own experiences and consider the needs of animals for a 'healthy and dignified life.'
Miles noted that caring for animals involves recognizing them as 'sentient beings capable of experiencing pain, distress, comfort, and joy,' and that human responsibility lies in ensuring respect for their needs. Improving animal welfare begins with understanding them as individuals with specific physical, psychological, and behavioral needs.
She cited the example that 'a dog requires safety, companionship, and responsible care.' On World Animal Day, which falls on October 4th, FOUR PAWS advocates for providing agricultural animals with space and freedom to express natural behaviors. Farm animals, for instance, require suitable living conditions, space, and humane treatment throughout their lives, while wild animals need freedom from exploitation and the ability to live according to their natural behavior.
The organization strongly recommends that the public use World Animal Day to take practical steps to improve animal lives. Fiona Miles added that although many people deeply care about animals, they sometimes fail to realize how their daily choices affect them, and that 'small actions multiplied across communities can have a significant impact.'
Beautiful Design for 2026
To mark this year's theme, World Animal Day collaborated with resident illustrator Emma Jane to create a poignant design highlighting the impact of human activity and climate change on marine ecosystems. Emma drew inspiration from the Coral Triangle—a vast marine reserve surrounding Papua New Guinea, and one of the most biodiverse aquatic areas on Earth.
Emma explained that the Coral Triangle is 'such a fascinating area because it hosts an enormous amount of marine life.' She stressed that coral reefs are among the planet's richest and most vital ecosystems, supporting about 25% of all marine life in just 1% of the seafloor area.
This region supports 3000 species of fish, representing the highest diversity of reef fish globally, 600 types of reef-building corals, 131 documented species of sharks and rays, and 6 out of 7 species of sea turtles. Emma's artwork focuses attention on this crisis, inviting the world to see the ocean through the eyes of its inhabitants. 'In my composition, I look at the ecosystem from the perspective of the marine life within it,' she said.
'To depict marine life, I created a fish-shaped lens through which we can see corals and coral bleaching,' she elaborated. Inside this fish-shaped lens, the perspective focuses on the beauty of parrotfish, clownfish, sea turtles, dolphins, dugongs, manta rays, octopuses, and whales, serving as a vivid visual reminder of life beneath the waves. FOUR PAWS South Africa Director, Fiona Miles, concluded: 'On this World Animal Day, we call on South Africans to see the world through animals' eyes and ask themselves a simple question: what can I do today to create a better life for the animals around me?'
