Endangered New Zealand Blackbird Wins 'Bird of the Year' 2026 Contest

The blackbird, which is on the brink of extinction in New Zealand, has been chosen as the 'Bird of the Year' for 2026. In 1980, there were only five individuals of this species left in the world. Thanks to continuous rescue efforts, the population has grown to approximately 350 adult birds.

In this year's election, the Blackbird received over 25,500 votes. This small species, known in New Zealand as Karure, inhabits the Chatham Islands, located about 800 kilometers from the mainland of New Zealand. More than 105 thousand people voted in total in the 'Bird of the Year' 2026 election. The Blackbird won, beating out birds such as the Kakapo and the New Zealand Falcon.

The Blackbird population has significantly declined over many years; only five individuals remained in 1980. Among them were one female named Old Blue and one male named Old Yellow. Attempts to increase the population began with these birds.

The New Zealand conservation team continuously monitored these birds, taking special measures to protect eggs and chicks. In some cases, Blackbird chicks were fed by other bird species, which allowed a larger number of chicks to grow up safely and gradually increased their numbers.

Currently, about 350 adult Blackbirds live on two protected Chatham Islands. On these territories, the birds are protected from mice, wild cats, and other animals. Despite the population growth, the Blackbird is still considered a seriously endangered species in New Zealand.

The main problem for it is the limited availability of safe habitats on the two islands where it currently lives. Therefore, work is underway to create another safe area to increase the population. Steps are being taken to remove predators from other islands and create a favorable environment there.

More than 105 thousand voters participated in the 'Bird of the Year' 2026 election, and the Blackbird garnered over 25,500 votes. This marked the first victory for this species in this contest. The 'Bird of the Year' elections draw public attention to bird species that require help with conservation.

The history of the Blackbird also demonstrates that even if a bird's population becomes very small, its population can be restored through constant care and rescue operations. Nevertheless, the Blackbird still requires safe habitats and continuous care.
