DeepSeek releases Harness v0.2.1-alpha.1 with experimental compatibility layer for Claude Code Mods

DeepSeek published version DeepSeek Harness v0.2.1-alpha.1 on GitHub repository on October 3rd, during China's national holiday, and less than a week after the release of the preliminary v0.2 version, which added desktop installers and a plugin manager to its open-source agent application.

The main innovation is an experimental compatibility layer for Claude Code Mods—a customization system introduced by Anthropic for its coding agent in early October.

Mods are event handlers written in JavaScript or TypeScript that function within Claude Code and can observe, modify, or intercept moments such as tool requests, prompt submissions, and interface rendering.

Examples provided by Anthropic include Token Weather, which displays context usage as a weather forecast; Blast Radius, which shows the probable impact of a risky command before execution; and Replay Theater, which allows viewing file changes in reverse order.

Goals and Architecture

In the release notes, DeepSeek clearly outlined the goal of this update. At this stage, this layer is intended to verify that the capabilities of Claude Code Mods API are a subset of what Harness plugins can do, rather than ensuring full practical compatibility for users.

This change was implemented by Cui Tianyi, the lead of the Harness team. When Boris Cherny, the project lead for Claude Code, announced the Mods, Cui congratulated the team and called it a smart way to make the agent framework extensible, noting that Harness was originally developed with an architecture where everything is a plugin, allowing models, tools, sessions, sandboxes, the agent loop, and the user interface to be replaced or extended.

He joked that the team's plugin engineering could now be called mod engineering.

The bridge is implemented as an experimental package. The mod registration function is wrapped and mounted as a Harness plugin, after which its hooks can control tool calls, rewrite prompts, add commands and tools, read session data, and display a bar above the prompt window. Examples like Token Weather, Blast Radius, and Replay Theater are included as working demonstrations.

The documentation also lists gaps: four mods from Anthropic's own repository—diff, agents-md, sec-default, and telemetry—are marked as non-functional because they depend on events, interfaces, or panels that are not yet supported. Mods cannot simply be copied; they are loaded via Harness's own configuration and operate without a sandbox.

Additional Enhancements for Plugin Developers

Two other additions are aimed at plugin creators. The plugin management page now features a 'Allow Agent to Create Plugin' option, which opens a Creator mode with a saved draft and only starts working after a request is sent, simplifying the search for conversational plugin writing introduced in v0.2.

The optional Developer Tools package includes raw session logs, bidirectional navigation between chat groups and conversations, and built-in host diagnostics.

The alpha version also contains bug fixes and some breaking changes for plugin authors, including the removal of plugins with runtime invariants.

Preliminary version of DeepSeek Harness available as Electron packages for Windows and macOS

DeepSeek Harness now has a preliminary version for desktop computers: downloadable Electron installers for Windows and macOS operating systems are available on the website download.deepseek.com, according to reports from 36Kr and AI Front dated around September 25, 2026. The official product name is DeepSeek / DeepSeek Harness.

Previously, Pandaily covered the launch of the open-source Harness Agent runtime and the Tencent WeKnora plugin; this review focuses specifically on the desktop client interface, not a repetition of information about the open framework.

Community builds align with the official update host specified in the deepseek-ai/deepseek-harness repository. Examples of available packages include an executable for Windows x64 and a DMG for Mac arm64 in the 0.1.7-rc.1 branch, which contains a built-in updater showing version 0.1.7-rc.2. Apple certification involves Hangzhou DeepSeek Artificial Intelligence Co., Ltd. with package ID com.deepseek.dsh. At the time of publication of these materials, the packages had not yet been placed on the main DeepSeek page or in the GitHub Releases section, so they should be considered available via a preview or nightly channel, rather than as a general public release. The reports did not contain information about a build for Linux desktop systems.

Technical notes indicate that the desktop application shell utilizes existing Web UI components, as well as agent runtimes, sessions, tools, and plugins, instead of completely rewriting Harness from scratch. The first login may require real name verification, balance top-up, or quota usage, or users can insert an official API key. Product modes cover the categories 'Office and Creation' and 'Code and Development', offering process visibility options (Results Focus, Key Details, Full Process) and agent workflow levels, including Standard, PTC (Tool invocation), Minimalist, and Creation for Cordis plugin debugging.

For developers who already use Harness from the source code, the main news is the appearance of an official Electron preliminary version on the CDN for Win/Mac—this is a weekly package, not a declared product for widespread use or the release of a new base model.
