Bulls coach Johan Ackermann expressed regret over costly errors and missed opportunities after his team suffered a narrow defeat to Munster at Thomond Park stadium on Saturday evening during the United Rugby Championship (URC).
The visiting team lost the intense confrontation with a score of 26-22 and was close to securing another important away victory in the new season. However, defensive lapses, an inability to maintain strong territorial play, as well as some expensive penalties and mistakes, proved to be decisive factors. Furthermore, Ackermann complained about several refereeing decisions that were not in his team's favor.
Despite the loss, the Bulls demonstrated significant character in defense, and with greater accuracy at critical moments, they could have secured an impressive away win following their first success last week.
Ackermann stated: 'I was proud of the effort, proud of how the guys fought, and they even gave us a chance at the very end. If we could have scored a touchdown, we would have won.' He continued that he was disappointed because this was a match where, in his opinion, a result could have been easily achieved if something had improved—the team's execution, one or two handling errors, perhaps decision-making in passing and kicking.
He noted tactical shortcomings: 'There were moments when we should have passed, but instead kicked, or vice versa; when we passed and forced the pass, but should have kicked. Then, obviously, handling errors and losing possession meant we were losing both in possession and territorial advantage.'
The Bulls were particularly effective when pressuring Munster, but too often found themselves in unfavorable areas of the field. Their defensive intensity was excellent, they created good attacking opportunities while in possession, and the set-piece play was satisfactory.
However, their inability to sustain play in the opponent's half, combined with turnovers, especially in the first half, prevented them from gaining real momentum in the battle. Nevertheless, going into halftime with a score of 14-14 would have given the visitors a lot of confidence.
Ackermann added: 'I don't have statistics yet, but it seemed to me that we played most of the match in the wrong areas due to our own errors or perhaps penalties. But I am proud, especially of the first part of the game. We defended really well.' He also emphasized that there were moments in the second half when they could have easily taken the win, even if they didn't feel in control of the game. 'They could have scored if we hadn't defended so well.' Concluding his comments, he thanked Munster for the win but admitted: 'We hurt ourselves. The three easy touchdowns they scored happened because of our mistakes.'
