Cabo Frio records highest rainfall in 30 years during September

The municipality of Cabo Frio recorded the highest volume of precipitation in the last thirty years in September. Rainfall indices reached values up to six times higher than the expected average for the period.

Data collected by the City Hall's rain gauges indicated that the 1st District received 267 millimeters of rain, while Tamoios accumulated 297.7 millimeters during September. This volume significantly exceeded the monthly climatological average, which was estimated at approximately 50 millimeters.

According to Civil Defense information, the high volume of rain resulted from the succession of cold fronts that moved along the coast, combined with the transport of moisture coming from the ocean. During September, the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) issued several weather warnings for the city, including orange level alerts on the 1st, 14th, and 23rd.

Precipitation continued into early October, keeping the weather unstable in Cabo Frio since Friday night (2), with rain occurring throughout Saturday (3).

For the current month, the forecast points to an alternation between periods of stability and episodes of instability. Civil Defense warned about the possibility of moderate to heavy rains, accompanied by thunderstorms and wind gusts, especially when cold fronts pass or unstable areas form.

The first half of October presents the greatest potential for rainfall, with a tendency to alternate between calmer periods and isolated showers between the 7th and 15th. In the second half of the month, variations in climatic conditions are also expected, with a chance of increased humidity and the emergence of new unstable areas.

Due to the approach of a cold front, Cabo Frio has been placed on alert status for the next 24 hours. The forecast for this Saturday (3) predicts the possibility of rain and moderate intensity winds. For Sunday (4), the expectation is a gradual decrease in rainfall, although winds may intensify, reaching speeds between 30 and 35 km/h, with gusts potentially reaching 54 km/h.

Civil Defense advises residents to monitor official communications and avoid flooded areas during periods of intense rain. In emergencies, the agency can be contacted at phone number 199 or (22) 2647-0199. For related matters, the Municipal Civil Guard is available at number 153.
