Stormers Captain Ruan Nel States Team Accepts Criticism After Loss to Edinburgh in URC

Stormers captain Ruan Nel reported that the players are accepting criticism following a heavy defeat against Edinburgh in the URC tournament on Friday.

Nel emphasized that Stormers will not look for excuses after their disappointing 17-13 loss to Edinburgh in Scotland. He insisted that the players are ready to accept criticism as they prepare to rectify the situation in the match against Sharks.

The team from Cape Town looked like they had taken a very advantageous position at Hive Stadium after an excellent defensive performance in the first half, despite the strong wind. At the start of the match, the hosts led by 3-0 in their United Rugby Championship (URC) clash in the Scottish capital.

However, the visitors failed to capitalize on the favorable conditions after the break. Missed opportunities, growing errors in lineout play, and poor attacking decisions ultimately cost them the chance to secure their first away win against the hosts.

Nel admitted that Stormers could have found many reasons for such a result but noted that the players refuse to use them as excuses. 'We could probably find a million excuses for how the result turned out, but we won't,' Nel said in a video message from Edinburgh.

He continued: 'We had chances, but at certain moments we were simply not good enough. So it all starts and ends with us; we just need to be better. We will never be satisfied with this kind of play or a loss in the Stormers' form.' He added: 'Believe me, guys, we understand the disappointment. We are just as disappointed, but know that we are working very hard.'

Stormers will have little time to dwell on the setback, as the team faces Sharks on Saturday at DHL Stadium. After two defeats in the URC last season against their coastal rivals, the home team must make up for lost ground, especially in their first home game of the new season.

Nel stated that the squad is using this week to quickly correct mistakes. This match will also be the first time Stormers wear their new 'Men in Black' kit. He concluded: 'There is a huge match this weekend, obviously the return to DHL Stadium against Sharks. Thank you for the criticism; it just shows that you are emotionally invested in this journey with us. We appreciate each one of you and are very happy to come home and start playing in front of our loyal fans.'

Stormers lose to Edinburgh in URC due to out-swing problems

The Stormers team, led by John Dobson, experienced disappointment after their recent loss to Edinburgh in Scotland on Friday evening. The main reason for the failure against the home side at Hive Stadium was the team's issues with out-swing.

Despite intense defensive battles and playing in strong winds, Stormers managed to keep opponents scoreless until halftime. However, the situation changed in the second half after the team's out-swing faltered. Substitute hooker Vernon Paulo could not find his players and also made errors in ball handling. In the end, Edinburgh won with a score of 17-13, scoring two tries against the wind.

The failure of the out-swing proved critical, especially in the absence of South African international Andre-Hugo Winter, which hindered the team's ability to establish a platform. In rare moments when the out-swing worked correctly, the team could utilize powerful rolling mauls.

United Rugby Championship

Rugby Director John Dobson stated that the out-swing problems cannot be ignored as a reason for the defeat. Stormers' series of matches without wins in Scotland continued, and their undefeated start to the current season ended.

Dobson noted that their performance was reflected in the last lost out-swing, commenting on the defeat to the young and energetic home side. He emphasized that the loss of Winter was very significant, not only in terms of the out-swing but also as one of the team's best players. It was frustrating that he was not allowed back onto the field after concussion treatment, but this complies with protocol.

During Stormers' final attack in the middle of the Edinburgh half, when the out-swing was close to the try line, Paulo again could not find his players. When the ball was returned to the hooker, he could not secure possession, allowing the opponent to send the ball out of bounds, ending the game.

Dobson added that they lost about 11 out-swings, and it is impossible to win if the game plan is based on mauls while losing possession. He admitted that it was extremely disappointing given the windy conditions and suggested that if they had lost only half of these out-swings, they might have finished the match.

Stormers demand more decisiveness ahead of Edinburgh match in URC

Stormers captain Ruan Nel and his teammates intend to improve their efficiency during the clash with Edinburgh on Friday evening, as part of the second round of the United Rugby Championship (URC).

The Stormers team will strive for a more decisive style of play when meeting Edinburgh at Hive Stadium on Friday. The goal is another URC victory, which will bring bonus points. After defeating Connacht in the opening match of the campaign, the team plans to continue playing with improved performance, aiming to maintain an unbeaten streak.

However, the game takes place at a stadium where they have not previously won in the URC, foreshadowing a tense match. Last Friday in Galway, Stormers defeated the hosts 29-15, but a large number of missed attacking opportunities almost cost them the win. Therefore, in Edinburgh, the team will focus on converting all scoring chances when they are within reach.

This will be critically important if the South African team wants to secure its first victory over the hosts at the well-known difficult Hive Stadium. They will have to face not only the 15 players of the Scottish club but also a highly motivated home crowd.

Nevertheless, Stormers is an experienced team, and the return of Springbok captain Siya Kolisi should inspire the players even more. Young player Yakin Ahmed, who plays winger, is also ready to activate the guests' attack. In the opening match in Galway, the defensive line was forced to give way to the forwards.

Rugby Director John Dobson noted: 'We know that Edinburgh is a difficult place to play, and we have some experience, including Siya, Ntuthuko (Mchunu) and Stefan (Ungerer), as well as Yakin Ahmed and Vandile Mlaba, who are very interesting young players.' He added: 'All 23 players will need to make great efforts to achieve results before we return to Cape Town for the decisive period of our season.'

After their first victory over Ulster last week, Edinburgh will be determined to maintain their winning streak against Stormers, but head coach Sean Everitt is aware of this challenge. They have more than 15 players on the injury list, but the return home will give the team strength.

Sean Everitt stated: 'We are incredibly happy to return to play in front of our fans; it feels like a long time since we had competitive rugby at home, and we, as a squad and staff, cannot wait to get on the field.' He continued: 'We know that Stormers present a different challenge, with the physical strength and directness of their forwards, as well as strong kicking play from their backline, but this is a challenge we are ready to face openly.'

Stormers ready to get revenge on Connacht in the opening match of the URC campaign in Galway

Stormers captain Ruan Nel stated that the team is set on revenge in the upcoming match against Connacht as the new United Rugby Championship (URC) season kicks off on Friday evening.

UNITED RUGBY CHAMPIONSHIP

The Stormers team begins its URC campaign against Connacht on Friday evening with a mission of retribution. The match, which will take place in Galway (starting at 20:45), will give the visitors a chance to start the season with a victory over the team they defeated last season, as well as inflict an early defeat on one of the Irish clubs that slowed their ambitions.

After reaching the semi-finals and coming close to the final, the Cape Town team hopes to start the new phase with a clean slate, aiming to repeat their success at the beginning of the URC season last year.

Ruan Nel commented on the trip to Galway, noting: 'Connacht is a difficult place to play, and I think they will break many teams there this season.' He added that a successful start in Galway would be a good beginning. He also mentioned the previous meeting at the DHL Stadium, calling it very tough for them, after which they conceded two unusual halves.

'So we will try to get revenge on their ground (on Friday),' Nel stated.

According to Nel, new players Siya Kolisi, Cheslin Kolbe, and Vilko Lowe are eager to join the squad. They briefly interacted during the photoshoot for the new jerseys, and the captain believes this trio will bring huge benefits to the group.

However, he emphasized that the human factor, especially among the senior Springbok players, will likely be the most important element. He believes this will help them achieve their goal—to win the URC for the first time since its inception.

Nel clarified that, unlike some teams that might only aim to make the top eight to participate in the Champions Cup, Stormers are targeting victory in both tournaments and want to be competitive in both leagues. He noted that many familiar players have returned to the squad, and they have formed a truly excellent group striving to win major trophies.

'We are very happy to play the first match in black kit. We would like to replicate this style, but the game has evolved, and everything has changed a bit. There is a certain responsibility associated with playing in the 'Men in Black' kit, but we will not create unnecessary pressure on ourselves or deviate from our identity and what makes us strong,' he concluded.
