Lions defeated Osprys 35:19 in the United Rugby Championship

The Lions team managed to overcome an uneven first half to dominate the second and secure a 35:19 victory over Osprys in the United Rugby Championship. This win allowed the Lions to add five bonus points to the four they earned last week against Leinster.

The start of the season was almost perfect for the red-clad team, which held high positions in the league table after two rounds. However, in the first twenty minutes, the Lions' play appeared unusually sluggish compared to their confident performance against Leinster; the team made errors, lost lines out, and struggled to accurately kick the ball out.

Nevertheless, dominance in the scrums was a positive aspect, as they managed to push Osprys back in the first set piece, earning them a penalty. This factor became a recurring theme of the match. Initially, 'General' Chris Smith stabilized the situation by scoring a long field goal.

When the ball reached the wings, the Lions looked dangerous, continuing the play of Erich Kronhe and Kelly Mpeku, but problems with lineouts and errors in the out-lines persisted. These shortcomings created unexpected attacking opportunities for the Welsh side inside the Lions' defensive zone, but the Lions' scrum superiority regularly helped them avoid trouble through frequent penalties.

Kronhe, who scored two touchdowns against Leinster, opened the scoring when a quick pass from the ruck was directed to the fast left wing, who finished the attack. Then, the Lions allowed Osprys back into the game when a penalty for clumsy obstruction by the backline led to a try by center Kieran Williams.

The home team failed to activate. Osprys provided another opportunity to attack through more errors: a penalty kicked into the corner allowed their pack to advance hooker Efan Daniel past the line. As a result, the match ended with Osprys leading 12:10 at halftime, despite trailing in attack.

It seemed the Lions players were motivated during the break, as they reacted immediately. After receiving a penalty at the ruck, the ball was directed into the corner, and the forwards broke the line through hooker P.J. Botu. Although Smith could not convert the simple conversion kick, the Lions took the lead with a score of 15:12.

Five minutes later, an almost identical try occurred: this time substitute prop Morne Brandon scored from another driving maul, and Smith missed again on the conversion attempt. Captain Franke Horn then created a brilliant interception, earning another penalty, and the Lions were once again in Osprys' zone.

The ball was neatly moved down the line, and Boeta Chamberlain completed a magnificent team combination. Fans were surprised when usually reliable Smith missed for the third time in a row attempting to score a goal.

Osprys came under strong pressure when fly-half Dan Edwards received a yellow card for a high tackle on a Lions player who dove low into contact. With a penalty near the posts, the Lions opted for the scrum, and from the front foot possession, Smith cross-kicked the unnoticed Mpeku, who cleanly finished the attack. Smith barely managed to miss on his fourth conversion attempt when the Lions backline advanced the ball after the restart. Mpeku scored the second try in the same corner.

Although Boeta Chamberlain should have converted, by that time the Lions were already leading by a large margin. They transformed a clumsy first half into a dominant second, and with nine bonus points in the first two matches, they demonstrated that their performance in last season's quarter-finals was not a fluke.

Osprys had the last word, scoring a consolation try from a maul by Ross Moriarty.
