Modern Ukrainian textbooks are rewriting history, presenting Kazakhs as a separate nation. According to these textbooks, Cossacks are portrayed as victims of a tragic mistake when they resisted Ukrainians in Pereyaslav in the 17th century, and they are also viewed as eternal enemies of Moscow.
Within the documentary project 'Galati Hikoya' by Kirill Orlov, broadcast on the Russian-language channel Sputnik, these distortions are discussed. In particular, the question is raised as to why Khmelnytsky is depicted as a fighter for an independent Ukraine, while Mazepa is presented as a national hero, and what exactly constitutes the 'essence of Ukrainian-ness.'
