Wrestler Aman Sehrawat wins gold medal at Asian Games after personal tragedies

Indian wrestler Aman Sehrawat from Goa has finally changed the color of his medal at the Asian Games. At the age of 23, he won the gold medal in the men's 57 kg freestyle wrestling category. In the semi-finals on Saturday, he defeated the world champion from North Korea, Chong Song Han, with a score of 11:7.

Aman demonstrated brilliant tactics in the match and successfully parried all attempts by Han to bypass him. Despite the efforts of the North Korean wrestler, Aman managed to maintain control throughout the entire match.

Before the final, Aman beat Ayal Belolubsky from Tajikistan with a score of 14:8 in the semi-final. This victory allowed him to compete for gold at the Asian Games for the first time, which he ultimately won in the final.

Previously, Aman had won a bronze medal at the Asian Games in Hangzhou in 2023, but now he has replaced it with gold. Meanwhile, Sujit Kalkal won gold in the men's 65 kg weight category, indicating India's excellent performance in wrestling.

Aman Sehrawat's journey was full of difficulties. He lost his mother at the age of 10, and a year later, his father passed away. After this, he was supported by his uncles. Aman's wrestling career began on the dusty training grounds of Birohara in Haryana, and later he moved to the Chatrasal stadium in Delhi, where under the guidance of coach Lalit Kumar, his skills significantly improved. His wrestling style is characterized by high speed, an aggressive approach, and constant movement.

Aman achieved significant success early in his career: in 2018 and 2019, he won bronze at the U-17 World Championships, and in 2019, he won gold at the U-17 Asian Championships. In 2022, he was the gold medalist at the World Championships and the U-23 Asian Championships.

In May 2024, at the Olympic qualification tournament in Istanbul, he secured an Olympic quota spot for India in the men's 57 kg freestyle wrestling category. Before the Beijing Olympics, he trained for about eight hours daily.

At the 2024 Beijing Olympics, Aman won a bronze medal, becoming India's youngest individual Olympic medalist. However, his path remained challenging after Beijing. Due to an injury, he could not participate in the Asian Championships. After that, he won bronze at a ranking tournament in Mongolia and, in less than three weeks, won gold at an international tournament in Turkey in June 2025.

At the 2025 World Championships, he was disqualified before the bout due to stomach problems and could not make weight. Now, by defeating the world champion at the Asian Games, Aman has achieved another major accomplishment, adding to his collection an Olympic bronze and an Asian Games gold medal.

Gulvir Singh wins bronze medal in 5000 meters race at Asian Games

Gulvir Singh continues to demonstrate outstanding results in Japan. The star long-distance runner from India won a bronze medal in the men's 5000 meters race on Tuesday, finishing with a time of 13:32.75. With this achievement, Gulvir completed a triumphant series of medals at the 2026 Asian Games.

He has won three medals in three different running disciplines, thus adding his name to the history of Indian athletics. Previously, Gulvir had already won silver medals in the 1500 meters and 10,000 meters races. Thus, since stepping onto the track in Japan, Gulvir has consistently brought the podium to India: silver in 1500m, silver in 10,000m, and now bronze in 5000m—three races, three medals.

Winning bronze in the 5000 meters is not just another award for Gulvir. He has become the second Indian man to win three medals in athletics at the same Asian Games. Before him, Ravi Pinto held this record. In the first Asian Games, held in New Delhi in 1951, Pinto won gold medals in the 100 and 200 meters, as well as silver in the 4x100 meter relay.

As for female athletes, Pit Thi Usha's impressive statistics from the 1986 Seoul Olympics remain unchanged: she won five medals, including four gold and one silver. Additionally, Kim M. Binamol won three medals at the 2002 Asian Games in Busan.

Gulvir's name is not limited to the Asian Games. This leading long-distance runner from India and holder of the current national record in the 5000 meters also achieved a historic success at the 2026 Glasgow Commonwealth Games. By winning a bronze medal in the men's 5000 meters race, he became the first Indian to receive a medal in this discipline at the Commonwealth Games.

In addition, last year Gulvir also won a gold medal at the Asian Athletics Championships, held in Gumi, South Korea, in the 5000 meters. Thus, Gulvir's journey goes beyond simply setting records; the series of three medals at the Asian Games has cemented his name in the history of Indian long-distance running.
