The Story of Premanand Maharaj's Renunciation: From Leaving Home to Becoming a Sadhu in Vrindavan

Recently, the well-known Baba Premanand Maharaj from Vrindavan has become a subject of discussion. The reason for this attention is that Premanand Maharaj's disciple, Rasik Dulari, also known as Dipak Lodhi, passed away under mysterious circumstances after falling from the fourth floor of the ashram. The initial police investigation considered it suicide, but new details have now emerged in the case, which are being studied by the police and the forensic team.

When speaking of devotion to Radha and Krishna in the streets of Vrindavan, Premanand Maharaj's name is mentioned first. Thanks to social media, videos of his satsangs have reached an audience across the country and abroad. Among the people who came to him were both ordinary followers and famous personalities.

It is said that since childhood, his mind was more inclined towards worshiping God than worldly matters. Even in adolescence, a strong feeling of renunciation awakened in him, and he decided to leave home in search of God. This journey through Kashi, Raslila, and then Vrindavan changed the direction of his life.

Who is Premanand Maharaj?

Premanand Maharaj's original name is Aniruddha Kumar Pandey. According to available data, he was born in 1969 in the state of Uttar Pradesh. His family lived in a religious atmosphere, and he showed an inclination towards spiritual activities from childhood. His father, Shambunath Pandey, was a man of religious disposition, and his mother, Rama Devi, was also interested in devotion. Due to the influence of spiritual traditions in the family, Aniruddha was in a religious environment from an early age, but his interest was not limited to ordinary religious practices. In his early years, he sat in temples listening to the Ramayana and Shrimad Bhagavad Gita.

Interest in Devotion Since Age Five

According to information about Premanand Maharaj's childhood, he showed a special interest in hymns and religious stories from around the age of five. While other children spent time playing, Aniruddha preferred to sit in the temple listening to stories and hymns. Questions about life, death, and God began to arise in his consciousness at an early age. It is said that he often pondered who would remain with him when all members of the family left this world. He found the answer to such questions in devotion to God. Gradually, God ceased to be just an object of worship for him and became the center of his life.

The Thought of Renunciation at Age 13

By adolescence, the feeling of renunciation in him deepened further. It is recounted that around the age of 13, he expressed a desire to leave home in search of God before his mother. The family perceived this as an emotional state typical of that age and did not take it seriously. However, the thought of renunciation constantly strengthened in Aniruddha's mind. Eventually, the moment came when he decided to leave home. According to accounts and known facts about his life, he left home early in the morning, around three o'clock. He had no grand plans or desire for worldly comfort; in his heart was only the thirst to attain God.

The Difficult Practice That Began in Kashi

After leaving, his path led him to Kashi. Varanasi has been a land of sadhus and spiritual seekers for centuries. The atmosphere of the Ganga ghats and temples became part of his practice. His daily routine was quite rigorous. It included bathing in the Ganges, meditation, chanting, and receiving alms at limited times. Sometimes, if he managed to get food, he accepted it, and if not, he did not complain. This period was difficult both physically and morally, but it was during this time that his feelings of devotion and renunciation grew stronger.

Life Changed After Watching the Raslila

An event occurred during his stay in Kashi that changed the direction of his future path. At the insistence of one saint, he attended a religious event where the Raslila was taking place. The legends of Radha and Krishna, the devotional music, and the entire atmosphere had a profound impact on his mind. It is said that he went to watch the Raslila daily for about a month. When the event ended and the artists headed back to Vrindavan, Aniruddha's desire to go to Vrindavan also intensified. He asked the event participants to take him along. He had no money, so he offered to serve. Although he could not go with them, he was advised to go to Vrindavan, and this advice became a turning point in his life.

A New Path of Devotion in Vrindavan

After this, Aniruddha arrived in Vrindavan. Here, he encountered the tradition of Radha Vallabha devotion. The Radha Vallabha tradition places special importance on the loving devotion to Radha and Krishna. The spiritual atmosphere of Vrindavan greatly pleased his soul. It is said that he received initiation into mantra sharanagati from Mohit Goswami. After this, he connected with Shri Gaurangi Saran Ji Maharaj, whom he considered his senior guru.
