The state of Paraná is under weather warnings for storms this weekend, forecasting intense rain, hail, and wind gusts that may reach up to 100 km/h. Alerts issued by the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) will begin at noon this Saturday (3) and extend until 11:59 PM, driven by the advance of a cold front that intensifies regional instability.
The most severe alert level, classified as orange (danger), covers 69 municipalities, mainly concentrated in the West and Southwest regions of the state. The climate projection points to precipitation between 30 and 60 millimeters per hour, or a total accumulation of 50 to 100 millimeters during the day, accompanied by hail and winds ranging between 60 and 100 km/h. Inmet warned of possible consequences such as power supply interruptions, crop damage, tree falling, and flooding.
Additionally, another 144 cities are under yellow alert (potential danger). In these locations, rain of 20 to 30 millimeters per hour, or up to 50 millimeters in total, is expected, with winds of 40 to 60 km/h and the occurrence of hail.
These warnings coincide with the arrival of a new cold front in Paraná. According to the Paraná Environmental Technology and Monitoring System (Simepar), Saturday will start with muggy weather and culminate with risks of potentially severe storms in various parts of the state.
Climatempo's analysis indicates that instability on Saturday will be strengthened by the action of low-pressure areas, promoting greater cloudiness and rain showers, initially more present in the west, center, and north, but with the potential to affect other areas throughout the day. Simepar reported that although the east will maintain more cloudiness in the morning, the sun should appear inland, with few clouds in the morning period, which favors the increase in temperatures.
From the afternoon, quick and isolated rains are expected, without ruling out more vigorous downpours. At night, the approach of the cold front will bring strong storms—characterized by rain, intense wind, many lightning strikes, and hail—covering the northwest, west, southwest, and south-central regions. For Sunday, the instability will intensify, spreading rain across almost all of Paraná. Climatempo attributes this to the low pressure associated with the advance of the cold front, predicting heavy rains, strong winds, hail, and thunderstorms, with high accumulations, especially in the west, north, and center of the state. Simepar models indicate that the peaks of these storms should occur between dawn and early morning, although isolated rain events may persist in the afternoon and evening, while Monday and Tuesday remain unstable due to the intensification of a low-pressure system in neighboring countries.
Precautions during storms
Inmet advises that during wind gusts, people should avoid seeking shelter under trees due to the risk of falls and electrical discharges. It is also recommended not to park vehicles near transmission towers or advertising panels. In cities under orange alert, the guidance is to turn off electrical equipment and the main power panel, if it is safe to do so. In areas under yellow alert, it is recommended to avoid using electronic devices connected to the electrical grid. In case of emergency, the population should contact Civil Defense at 199 or the Fire Department at 193.
