The left-handed batsman for the Titans, Lhuan-dre Pretorius, set a world record in the T20 format by scoring 188 runs without being dismissed off just 79 balls during the match against Knights on Friday evening.
This young player, aged 20, demonstrated incredible performance by scoring 188 runs without falling out of the 79 balls for Titans against Knights in Bloemfontein on Friday. His score surpassed the record of West Indies legend Chris Gayle, who previously scored 175 runs without being out for Royal Challengers Bangalore against Pune Warriors in 2013.
Pretorius hit 15 fours and 13 sixes, which allowed Titans to reach a total of 267/3. Furthermore, he broke the previous South African record held by his teammate at Titans, Dewald Brevis, who had scored 162 runs off 57 balls against Knights in 2022.
The Titans team decided to attack, setting a pace that Knights could not match. Sintemba Keshele and Pretorius together scored 112 runs in the first 7.4 overs, until Keshele (14 runs off 10 balls) was dismissed by Gihan Kloete off a delivery from Dan Pitt.
By the time Pretorius approached his record score, Brevis was caught by Haasbroek off a 7-run delivery from Bost, and Leus du Plooy, also caught by Haasbroek, was removed by Emmanuel Motsviri for 17 runs. This left Titans at 199/3 after 14.6 overs.
At that point, Pretorius was heading towards his target, having hit 15 fours and 13 sixes; 138 of his 188 runs were earned through boundaries. He finished the game with an average strike rate of 237.97. In the last five overs, Titans added 68 runs without losing any wickets, while captain Donovan Ferreira finished with 29 runs without being out off 11 balls, including two sixes.
Every Knights bowler conceded at least 11 runs per over. Malusi Siboto did not concede a single run in his four overs, Motsviri conceded 1 run in 47, Pitt conceded 1 in 49, and Ross Bost conceded 1 in 46. Nelan van Heerden (0/29), Mbongisini Mlanga (0/27), and Jack Snyman (0/11) bowled three overs.
Previously, Pretorius's best T20 performance was 102 runs without being out, which he scored earlier this year in the Major League Cricket. Last month, he became the youngest fully-fledged player to score a hundred in T20Is—101 runs off 53 balls against Namibia, and he previously topped the run-scoring chart in his debut season of Betway SA20.
