Micron predicts memory prices will remain high due to high AI demand

Micron anticipates that the shortage of memory chips will not be resolved soon, projecting that the imbalance between supply and demand will intensify further in 2027 and 2028. This increase is mainly driven by the rapid growth and increasing need of the artificial intelligence sector.

During its financial results presentation, Sanjay Mehrotra, President and CEO of Micron, stated that demand will continue to exceed supply over the next two years, and the company cannot determine when the market will return to a state of equilibrium.

This period of restricted supply has coincided with notable financial results. The demand for memory allowed Micron to surpass Tesla and Meta in market value. In the last fiscal quarter, the company reported revenue of US$ 54.2 billion (approximately R$ 283 billion), representing a 379% year-over-year growth, along with a net profit of US$ 37.7 billion (R$ 197 billion).

According to the executive, more than 75% of the manufacturer's planned production for 2027 has already been secured. Most current negotiations with customers focus on supplying parts for 2028. This outlook confirms a trend observed by Tecnoblog: large manufacturers such as Micron, Samsung, and SK Hynix have already secured a large part of their future capacity in response to the demand from artificial intelligence data centers.

Although Micron states it is increasing its production capacity, this process will take several years. The company plans to begin manufacturing at a new facility located in Idaho in mid-2027. Additionally, other expansions planned for the United States, Japan, Taiwan, and Singapore are expected to start between next year and the end of 2028.

Even with these plans, supply is expected to remain limited. At the beginning of this year, the manufacturer itself had already predicted that RAM prices would only begin to improve in 2028. The current scenario is unfavorable to consumers but very advantageous for manufacturers, who are concentrating their capacity on memories intended for AI accelerators and servers, products that are more profitable than consumer-oriented modules.

Micron even discontinued the traditional Crucial line to prioritize high-growth customers, while still maintaining the supply of components for computer assemblers and other devices. Meanwhile, in certain comparisons between 2025 and 2026, RAM prices have already risen by 500%. The decrease in the supply of components for PCs, laptops, and smartphones is also expected to continue putting pressure on electronics costs in the coming years.
