Sea elephant spotted at São Conrado Beach, South Zone of Rio de Janeiro

A sea elephant was observed at São Conrado Beach, located in the South Zone of Rio de Janeiro, on Friday morning (2). The animal's presence attracted the attention of beachgoers, prompting the Fire Department to isolate the area where it was found.

Around 11 am, several people were taking photographs of the animal. Marcelo Szpilmann, a biologist from AquaRio, advised the public to maintain a safe distance, warning: 'Never approach a wild animal, especially one of this size and with strong teeth.'

Szpilmann explained that despite its size, the specimen in question is a young one that reached the Rio de Janeiro coast, likely brought there by a cold current from the south. He added that the animal has the ability to return to its natural habitat on its own.
