The Flying Dutchman funicular in Cape Point National Park officially resumed operations on October 1, 2026, providing visitors with convenient access to one of South Africa's most picturesque panoramic viewpoints.
Following a period of necessary maintenance and significant upgrades to the control system, the funicular is ready to welcome both local and international tourists to Cape Point. This 585-meter route ascends 87 meters, delivering passengers to a terraced viewing platform overlooking the turquoise waters of Diaz Beach, the historic lighthouse, and the vast ocean. From the upper terrace, visitors can take a 114-step hike to the very tip of the cape.
Named after the legendary ghost ship, the Flying Dutchman holds a special place in the history of South African engineering. It was originally opened in December 1996 as the first commercial funicular on the African continent and was built using local innovations, specifically unique tubular rails developed by South African inventor Peter Kuzel.
Operating on a balanced two-car system, each car accommodates 40 passengers. At full capacity, the funicular can complete up to 240 trips daily, transporting approximately 378,000 visitors annually. In addition to its historical significance, the funicular is environmentally conscious: its modern magnetic drive system reduces energy consumption by 50% while ensuring an exceptionally quiet ride up.
Visiting Cape Point offers more than just breathtaking views. The surrounding nature reserve is home to rich biodiversity, where lucky guests can spot cormorants nesting on the cliffs, terns soaring in updrafts, dassies basking on rocks, or humpback whales swimming in the bay.
As part of the Tourism Month celebration in Cape Point from September 7 to October 4, 2026, special promotional offers will be available. Whether you are visiting Cape Point for the first time or returning to enjoy the updated ride, using the Flying Dutchman funicular remains the most reliable way to reach the highest point of the cape. Visitors are advised to purchase tickets for the funicular in advance online at www.capepoint.co.za.
