UFJF Faculty of Dentistry offers free root canal treatment for cancer and chronic disease patients

The Faculty of Dentistry at the Federal University of Juiz de Fora (UFJF) makes free root canal treatment available for individuals diagnosed with cancer and those who have certain chronic or systemic illnesses.

This service is conducted by the extension project called Endodontic Treatment for Oncological Patients (Tepos), which was established in June 2025. The main focus of the care is directed towards oncological patients and those who require radiotherapy.

In addition to cancer patients, the initiative also assists people with conditions such as diabetes, difficult-to-manage hypertension, chronic kidney disease, and other pathologies that require special attention during dental procedures.

The service is free and restricted to residents of Juiz de Fora and the Zona da Mata who meet the requirements defined by the project. Consultations take place every Monday from 5 PM to 7 PM at the premises of the UFJF Faculty of Dentistry.

To start the treatment process, the patient must obtain a referral guide at their reference Basic Health Unit (UBS). Subsequently, they must go to the Reception sector of the Faculty of Dentistry. Alternatively, it is possible to contact the project team directly via WhatsApp using the number (32) 99804-1660.

Specialized Care

Root canal treatment is necessary when there is internal damage to the tooth—specifically nerves, blood vessels, and fibers—due to inflammatory or infectious processes. This can occur, for example, in cases of advanced decay or dental fractures.

For patients with head and neck cancer, dental care prior to the start of oncological treatment is of great importance. It is essential to treat any foci of infection present in the oral cavity before radiotherapy, since dental interventions performed after this procedure can increase the risk of bone complications in the region.

In the case of people with diabetes, oral infections can also complicate glucose level control. For this reason, clinical monitoring can be integrated into the care provided to these patients.

According to Professor Warley Oliveira, from the UFJF Faculty of Dentistry and coordinator of the project, one of the biggest barriers faced by patients is access to specialized treatments, particularly when the procedure involves posterior teeth, such as molars and premolars.

Oliveira clarifies that 'some patients find it difficult to get specialized care in Juiz de Fora and the region. This occurs especially when they need more complex procedures, such as root canal treatment on posterior teeth.'

Project Expands Scope of Care

Initially, Tepos was conceived with the goal of assisting patients with head and neck cancer. Due to increased demand and interest from professionals in other areas of health, the scope of the project has been expanded to include individuals with systemic or chronic diseases.

Even with this expansion, oncological patients maintain priority in care. Currently, the project's capacity allows it to serve up to six people per week, on Mondays. Depending on the complexity of the case, multiple treatment sessions may be necessary.

Treating patients with more intricate health conditions requires individualized assessment and, at times, collaboration between dental specialists and professionals responsible for medical follow-up.

Warley Oliveira emphasizes that certain health conditions can imply changes in the dental treatment plan or even the need for a temporary suspension of procedures.

The team comprising the project consists of two stomatology professors, six final-year undergraduate students, one master's student, and one doctoral student. In addition to providing free assistance, the project serves as a practical training environment for students, allowing them to monitor high-complexity cases and gain contact with essential equipment for root canal treatment, such as endodontic motors and specific files.
