Danger of double medication dose: what to do if you miss the morning dose

Some people sometimes forget to take their morning dose of medication and then take both the morning and evening doses simultaneously in the evening. This raises the question of whether such behavior is safe or if it can harm health, as well as what the consequences of taking a double dose are.

In this regard, Narendra Sharma from the pharmaceutical department of MMG District Hospital in Gaziabad explained that taking two tablets at the same time in the evening after missing the morning dose can be dangerous, and such actions should strictly not be taken. Attempting to compensate for a missed dose with a double dose can negatively affect one's health condition.

Many patients taking medications to control blood pressure (BP), diabetes, or anticoagulants (blood thinners) need to take medicine twice a day. If a person forgets the morning dose and takes a double dose in the evening, blood sugar levels can drop sharply, and blood pressure can become too low or too high. This can cause dizziness, fainting, or nervousness.

Similarly, taking a double dose of blood-thinning drugs can lead to internal bleeding. Furthermore, double dosing in some cases can cause an immediate reaction, manifesting as abdominal pain or vomiting.

Taking a large amount of medication at once places a significant load on the liver and kidneys, increasing the risk of developing toxicity, which in itself is a serious health threat.

Instead of taking two doses in the evening, only one dose should be taken. It is important to maintain the established medication schedule. Never take two different doses prescribed for different times of the day together. If symptoms worsen and there is a need to take medication, one must consult a doctor.
