Delhi University (DU) and its affiliated Hindu College have come under scrutiny due to serious allegations of corruption and irregularities. Professors and staff from the Hindu College Staff Association issued a protest, submitting a letter to the VC of DU demanding the immediate transfer of control over the college to Delhi University and an impartial investigation into all circumstances.
In their appeal, the faculty raised several serious grievances. Among them are widespread violations in student admissions. It is alleged that established limits of 20% and DU rules were grossly violated during the admission of supernumerary students, despite objections from the admissions committee and department heads.
Furthermore, a meeting intended to approve admissions was documented as a fictitious 'Staff Council' session, with the elected secretary not being present at it.
The faculty stated that they suffer from an authoritarian management style by the college administration. Their leaves, as well as promotions, are intentionally delayed or blocked. It is also noted that parallel committees are being created for arbitrary decision-making instead of the official college 'Staff Council.'
Even sharper accusations have been made regarding financial matters. There are suspicions that college resources and land parcels are being used for private commercial activities. The tender for cafeteria services in the hostel was conducted in violation of rules. Moreover, contracts for security and cleaning, which have been in effect for years, are being renewed without open tenders. Audit documents, CAG reports, and tender conditions are not made public.
Student rights are also affected by these issues. It is claimed that the annual increase in tuition fees occurs without any explanation, and transparency in scholarship distribution is lacking. Additionally, dampness is observed in the college's newly constructed buildings, and fires occur regularly, which they demand be thoroughly investigated. Meanwhile, the Vice-President and other officials remain in their posts even after their term has expired.
The letter, signed by Rathan Lal, President of the Hindu College Staff Association, and Shankar Kumar, Secretary, clearly states that a fair investigation is impossible until the Chairman and Director of Hindu College are removed from office. They demand that DU immediately acquire the college to halt attempts at its privatization.
